Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone has some advice...I had Strep B in my first trimester and was given penicillin. This week I went to the ER (as I had a nasty flu bug) and as they HAD to do a full blood/urine work they found Strep B in urine. The ER doctor has prescribed penicillin....I will only take it once I speak to my OB on Monday...however I wonder what others have done if Strep B is found in the 2nd trimester. (BTW - I know they check for it @ around 36 weeks....)

I had it through out my pregnancy with my son and wasn't given and medication for it at all. I had to have a hospital birth and meds throughout labour but it shouldn't worry you.

There's no evidence that supports antibiotics except for in labour to reduce risk of transmission. Up to 1:4 women carry group B strep without even knowing so unless you're symptomatic of a urine infection you don't need antibiotics (I'm a midwife in the UK)

I took penacilin for it at 36 weeks with DS1 and it was gone by the time I went into labor with him. I took prnacilin for it at 30 weeks with DS2 (because apparently I am just one of those people who get it frequently) and it was back by the time I went into labor with him (almost at 41 weeks) and I had to do IV antibiotics and all that fun stuff durring labor. He never developed any problems from it.
