Hi

i was wondering if any of the single parents on here are also studying at either college or university (in the uk) ??

i really want to go to university to re-train for a new career. however i am not sure what my rights are and what is available to me?

i am on benefits as i am a lone parent and i also have nobody available to help with child care other than lacey's dad but he works full time so nobody during the day. is there help with child care?

if anyone could help i really appreciate it x

depend what courses you plan to do what kind of help you couild get i think.
I know as a singleparent i think on most courses you would get fees paid and student/maintenance loan of about 8k per year, would get childcare paid for by grant.

If you did a nursing degree or social work degree you can also get a nhs bursary paid monthly and this an work out much better.

Good luck hun, i did a degree with open university when teens were little and a masters then about ten years ago applied to do a Phd and against all odds won a university bursary at age 30....so it can definately be done huni....just have to be determined.

Im hoping to go back to university this september, have you thought about going part time to begin with?
im going to do 2 years part time to help us both settle in and then do the last 2 years full time when he'll be in nursery at least part time.
As far as im aware there is all sorts of help with childcare and financial help.
theres several people you can contact to make sure youll be getting everything your entitled to and deserve, job centre, student finance, the university itself, surestart.
Its going to be a lot easier for me as my mum is self employed so is going to help all she can.
Hope you get it all figured out and good luck with your studies :) xx

I start Uni Sept and from checking on student finance should be entitled to most of the grants avaliable. I'm not sure on the benefits side as it's all confusing, My ds will go to the uni nursery which I will get at reduced rate and will get help with the cost. If you know what course you want to do there is an estimator on student finance website.

I haven't really looked into studying at college or university. But I do study with the open uni, it's so easy having to do it from your own home. I get my courses paid for me and £260 study grant every year
