I went to the docs today as Anna has thrush on her tongue. Anyway they wouldn't let me see a doctor for that, so I had to see a nurse. No problem as they can prescribe treatment for thrush.

Except, oh yeah, they were STUPID! :hissy: First they didn't believe Anna had thrush, like I'm her mother I think I would know! She has a thick white coating on her tongue, it hurts both of us to nurse, she's constantly rubbing her tongue on the roof of her mouth / teeth to scratch the itchiness... My nipples are SO sore they hurt like hell! When feeding I get this toe curling, drawing pain right inside of them... :nope:

So anyway I insisted that she does have thrush (she's had it before so I know the symptoms!) and eventually managed to get her to prescribe some oral drops for her, but she insisted on taking a swab first to send off to make sure I wasn't wrong!

Anyway she finally went off to get a doctor to sign this script, and when she got back I asked her if I could get a prescription for myself as it was uncomfortable for me as well. And she looked really confused and asked, "where are you uncomfortable?" and like pointing at my nipples with an inquisitive stare as if to say, "surely you don't mean uncomfortable on your nipples?!" haha! So I said, "yes on my nipples" and she said, "Oh it's highly unlikely you'd have thrush on your nipples!" :saywhat:

I thought it was common knowledge that thrush can be passed from person to person? And that if you treat one person (breastfed baby or breastfeeding mother) for thrush you should treat the other because other wise they will just pass it back and forth from person to person?

I told her this but she just ignored the fact I have sore nipples and told me to treat Anna and the swabs would come back soon and they would let me know if she was taking the drops unnecessarily.

She very obviously did not believe that either of us has thrush and so in the end I was not given anything for my thrushy nipples :( and they hurt so bad! I might try putting Anna's oral drops on my nipples...

It'll be interesting to see what those swabs come back with!!

Sorry she wouldn't listen to you! Thats what it was like when I was convincing them Jasmine had reflux. I was sooo annoying, especially since I work in a hospital!

Hope you both feel better soon.

 Surely she should know that it's a very common problem that's easily passed from mother to baby if you're breastfeeding?! And if she was going to treat Anna she should have realised that there's no point without treating you as well.

Hope it gets better for you soon - we've had it too and I know how unbearable it is :hugs: x

The oral gel is meant to be good on your nipples (you can buy it over the counter) because you don't have to wash it off before feeding.

Didn't make much difference to me though - mine didn't clear up until I'd had 2 courses of tablets x

sorry clicked post before i had finished

hope you both feel better soon!

and you do have treat both mother and baby x

Thanks every one. They don't let you buy oral gel over the counter here it has to be prescription *sigh*

I guess I'll have to go back to the docs... :(

Really? The Daktarin stuff in the little orange tube? I bought some in Asda and Sainsburys (in the pharmacy sections, not on a shelf - said it was for me and that I'd been advised by the doctor to use it - didn't mention breastfeeding). Didn't realise they didn't sell it everywhere.

You can get the topical cream too (not the athletes foot stuff) but you have to wipe it off before feeding x

grr!!! oh tasha so sorry you were treated this way! what an idiot of a nurse! hope your both feeling better soon x

Don't know why I just bothered typing all that when I tried both for weeks and they did nothing, sorry :dohh: ...I'd definitely go back to the docs - or can you phone them and say that you've been given a prescription for Anna but not you and one without the other is useless...see if they'll just leave a prescription at reception for you - that's all I did when I needed more, so I didn't have to wait for another appointment x

I asked in boots and lloyds pharmacy and they told me you need a prescription?

Thanks I'll try that x

Now Anna keeps trying to eat upsidedown (standing and leaning over my breast so she is sort of eating upside down.... if that makes sense) I wonder if it hurts less that way?!

Poor little princess :( Quite funny to see, though!

If that looks anything like how I'm imagining it,

Hope she's feeling better soon x

Oooh...the other thing is that you can get single big dose thrush treatment pills without prescription now - they have them near the counter in our Lloyds pharmacy. Not sure if that's enough though as I had a big loading dose then 2 weeks of smaller ones x

Sorry to hear she wouldn't listen to you i bet it was so frustrating, i hope you and Anna start to feel better soon xx
