Stupid/outdated/funny advice and beliefs

Oh god the amount of times I've had to bite my tongue to stop me from screaming "YOU DO NOT CATCH A COLD FROM BEING COLD!!!!" AHHHHHHHH

Letting newborn babies suck on chunks of food is good for them because it helps build their immune system.

"He should be fully weaned by 4 months, there's no excuse for him not to be"

"You're breastfeeding because it's good for you, not him. He'd be better off on formula"

All crackers MIL has come out with over the past month.

I read an article online a while back that said breastfeeding doesn't help you lose weight but instead makes it harder. It featured stories of moms who felt deceived by the government's brainwash to promote breastfeeding and they all nagged about how fat they became because of it. They all whined about how sad, frustrated, betrayed and angry they felt because they only breastfed as a weight loss method and it was a complete waste of time.
I can't find it now but I'd like to read it again for the fun of it. There was a war going on at the comments section.

Leave them to cry
they need their own bed
mum needs to be selfish
need weaning if wake in night
porridge in bottle

Seriously! this one drives me nuts, too. Hear it all the time from older generations.

Some of the ones I've heard:
If you don't have your baby sleep in his room from day 1, he'll be spoiled and always want to be in your room (nope, it wasn't a problem switching him to his room when we did)

They need fed at specific intervals throughout the day, and no more than that. If you feed more than that, they can get fat and spoiled, and then you'll be stuck feeding them more often. (Uh, no...actually they just have their needs met)

They need weaned onto solids at 4 months. They'll be too hungry if you wait longer than that. (I did wean DS1 around 4 months, but that was recommended by pediatrician to help with him spitting up so much. Had nothing to do with him "needing" it to feel full. And I wish I had waited longer to wean him, actually)

My first GYN said I might not have milk or my baby might not get full on my milk, that water birth is a joke and that I will definitely get pitocin, epidural, enema, etc. His midwive suggested I put alcohol on my nipples to prepare for breastfeeding. I left their practice after that and had a wonderful natural birth with better health providers.

My hairdresser was shocked I still breastfeed at 5,5 months. Her questions were if I had bloody nipples, if I was in pain and how on earth does baby sleep through the night on my milk alone.
My mil also tells me all the time how my milk must be good and nutritious. Every time I say all moms have good milk and she always replies "no! not everyone does!". Because she "didn't have milk" and she's sticking to that excuse whatever it takes.
A colleague of dh was keeping his 3 week old baby up all day so he would sleep through the night. He said it worked but I don't think it's a good idea for the baby.

My mom thinks I should have been giving water early on because "if baby is crying and already ate, she must be thirsty." My mom thought I was nuts trying to burp my baby, she thinks you don't have to.

My grandma believes vaccinations cause autism, thought I was nuts giving baby oatmeal with a spoon rather than in the bottle. She's given me countless lectures about why I should be breastfeeding.

My MIL thinks I'm crazy trying to rear face in the car seat past 2 years old. She encouraged to give my baby oatmeal by 1 month old because that's what she did for DH because he was so hungry.

Oh and everyone thinks that she is only crying because she is hungry.

My grandma came out with these crackers today

- Leave him to cry for half an hour, it'll tire him out.
- I shouldn't wait to try blw, I should have started feeding him at 3 months especially because he's a big baby.
- I shouldn't hold him too much or he'll get too clingy and I won't be able to leave him at all.

I saw an old commercial for condensed milk where they said it's the best thing for babies. It featured instructions to dilute 1 part condensed milk to 1 part water and put it in a bottle for a nutritious baby meal.

MIL: You must be breastfeeding out of habit by now.
Me: O_*

I remember seeing that, too! It was just... so weird, like they only bothered getting pregnant in the first place because they believed that bf would get them in better shape than pre-preg or something. I could have made some popcorn and been entertained by that comment section all. day. long. Some of the tangents people went off on were just.... insane is the only word I can come up with. Some grandma was there telling everyone about how breastfeeding gave her heel spurs? Another woman was talking about how breastfeeding prevents proper vaccine reactions? Every crazy came out of the wood works for that article.

I keep seeing a lot of parents that believe comspiracy theories about vaccines and don't give them to their kids. They even defend their choice by saying their kids get as many colds as vaccinated kids, as if that's the point of vaccinations - to prevent colds! I see a lot of parents trusting homeopathic doctors who don't vaccinate kids and are proud of it.
