Hi there!

Just putting the question out there... :help:

I've googled it and gotten conflicting results... :comp:

I'm majorly craving some of the yummo sushi rolls from a local shop, they are very very busy and have a very consistent turn over. And seem to have very good food handling practices.

What's the general go with eating sushi rolls with cooked fillings in pregnancy?

I'm inclined to think that if the shop looks clean, they are wearing gloves and handling food correctly, PLUS the high turn over... It must be okay?

Whats your thoughts?

Thanks for your quick response, that's my gut feeling too...

Raw fish can contain nasties, but when cooked.... Should be okay.

And with a high turn over, even the cooked rice should pose a problem, as it doesnt sit around for long enough for any bacteria to reproduce...

Maybe I'm thinking too much into it...!

I also read in one of my pregnancy books that sushi is ok as long as it's cooked :) Happy eating!

I would say its fine :) Fish in general is okay to eat, but don't over do the fish more than say 2 times a week. Main fish I read you need to stay away is shark and something else, but I don't ever see any of those things they posted on restraunt menus. Just make sure it hasnt been sitting out, and is fully cooked

I've heard the opposite - cooked rice is a breeding ground for bacteria such as listeria, as are room temperature cooked meats. I'm avoiding it this pregnancy, better safe than sorry :)

Here in Japan there is no advisory for pregnant women to avoid sushi, but food hygiene is of a very high standard and sushi is usually very fresh, and of course everyone here eats rice daily! If as you say the shop looks clean and there's a high turnover I'd go for it, especially if it's the cooked kinds.

Last year when I was pregnant I avoided raw sushi during the very hot summer here (I usually do anyway) but after that ate it whenever I felt like it (maybe a couple of times a month).

I personally wouldn't eat sushi. Rice is a breeding ground for bacteria and one of the most common foods that can cause food poisoning. I would only eat rice that is piping hot and that has been cooked myself!

You could always mention to the staff that you are pregnant and if they could make you a fresh batch. I am sure they would comply, I have had cooked sushi in my last pregnancy but not with the rice that has been lying around for a while. Sometimes they get the rice out in big batches in the morning and leave it in normal cool storage, I am just bothered what is cool enough or if it comes out and goes back in, that can often lead to bacterial issues.

I often find when I mention in restaurants I am pregnant, they do take extra care and make things fresh. I personally LOVE sushi but right now as I type this, I feel a little sickly, so wont mind going off it during Pregnancy as that is an easier way to not have it than crave for it and be stuck with a big no no.

I've wondered this too about veggie sushi! I have avoided it though because I am afraid of the cross-contamination from the sushi maker handling fish and then my avocado! I'm sooo concerned about everything though.

I have actually continued to eat sushi...raw. But I have stopped eating it now for the most part since I realized my favorite fish is on the high mercury list...yellowtail tuna. I am very careful where I purchase my sushi in terms of handling and hygiene, quality of fish, etc. I think that warning goes for all foods. It seems to me (though I have no stats at my disposal) more people have gotten food borne illnesses from spinach and other produce then raw fish lately.

sushi with cooked fish is fine. For example shrimp tempura or cooked crab/lobster. You just need to make sure they use seperate knifes and other utensils when making the different types of sushi. I LOVE LOVE LOVE sushi and cant wait to eat it again. So enjoy!!!

I would stay from it too..just to be safe..fish especially white tuna has higher mercury levels that the body does not get ride of so take an Omega 3 suppliment to get all the benefits ..Also avoid unpasterized cheeses and milk products, soft cheeses ( feta - my favourite) and cold cuts...for the same reason..Listeriosis....Normal, healthy adults can fight this bacteria off quicker if exposed but with a weaker immune system while pregnant...it's best to give it up..it's only nine months.

Listen to Hanelei as she's right. In the US the guidelines are to avoid raw fish sushi. Everywhere else, the guidelines say it is FINE to eat as long as the business has a very good reputation for food hygiene and you avoid high mercury fish. These are the ones at the top of the fish food chain such as Shark, Swordfish, Marlin and Tuna.

Personally, that means I would avoid eating sushi on a Sunday (no fresh fish available), from small businesses, in high summer and stick to salmon and mackerel types...especially smoked ones. But each to their own.
