Sweetening milk

I know soya is ment to affect there hormones and can affect there fertility but if you search the net kore info should cone up , x

Hmmm if soy formula isn't good, what about tofu? I feed Clara tofu a few times a week (she loves it). Not very much, but still...

It's recommended in very small amounts till thy hit one then you still should t give it to much x

I'm not a fan of soy products as a main source of nutrition for babies so personally I would choose NOT to switch. You said she needs special formula, is it because of an allergy to dairy? If so many babies allergic to dairy are also allergic to soy and that might be why they have chosen to put her on this.

I'm not sure about the amount but I probably would try the vanilla over anything else. Can you give your dr a call and see how much they think should be good? I'd imagine just a few drops as extract is quite strong

^the alcohol free extract available here is not that strong at all; its the extracts with alcohol/artificial vanilla flavourings that tend to be more concentrated in flavour; in a 7oz or so bottle of milk I reckon half a teaspoon of the extract should be about right; then it can always be decreased gradually. xx

Google 'soya warning' or 'soya health warning' and a lot of info will come up; some of it is scaremongering but you will also find pages from various governments in various countries; as well as articles from respectable newspapers etc. I used to think soya was the perfect veggie alternative, but I have never felt so ill in my life as when I started reacting to soya. There is a huge soya lobby though; especially in the US though also here in Europe and soybean products are subsidised by the US government so its hard to find the truth sometimes. xx

googled it and had no idea. Thankfully my baby is still 99.999% breastfed...just a bottle every 8 weeks maybe. lol We were told to put her on soy when I go back to work, but will be looking into goats milk. you can make your own goats milk formula, which is more acceptable for humans. look at drsears.com

ok im not going to use soy just sweetening the milk shes been given........vanilla or powder how much per 6oz....1tsp ? xxx

Vanilla essence is pretty strong - a drop or two should be plenty!

We used soy as a last resort.

Let me just say... DON'T use it unless it is a last resort (it was unfortunately the only product that he did not vomit). It's #1 ingredient was corn syrup solids (Enfamil soy) and when it spilled on the counter and dried, it wouldn't come off - it was that sticky. He also screamed in pain constantly (he does not do this anymore after we went back to a milk-based powder).

So yeah. It was really, really bad, and unfortunately our only option at the time. I wouldn't recommend it unless it was between that or no food at all. Just IMO.

vanilla essence is strong, however the extract (dr oetker) that doesn't contain alcohol is nowhere near as strong because its not as concentrated and comes from real vanilla; this is why I'd say 1/2 a tsp to begin with and then gradually decrease it. When I make cakes using the extract (essence is artificial flavouring; usually alcohol based but a lot of people muddle up the two) I use about 2 teaspoons because its pretty weak; when I use flavouring; as you can sometimes get non-alcoholic flavourings even 1 tsp can be too much; so there is a big difference in concentration. If you have an ASDA or tesco with a big carribean section they sometimes do flavouring/essence sans alcohol, though I did not find these as strong as the flavouring/essences by UK brands. I got this other brand of flavouring/essence recently from waitrose that does not contain alcohol; langdale or something and that is so strong its ridiculous, it even stinks out the inside of my oven with a definite vanilla smell after baking. xx

Yes, just add half teaspoon of vanilla and half teaspoon of brown sugar then gradually reduce the amounts.

And soy isn't recommend UK as it contains so many hormones it's thought to be linked to infertility in males later in life and something to do with female hormone production of estrogen or something (sorry I'm just trying to remember off the top of my head the research I done). Also, using soy as the main source of nutrition after a cow's milk allergy has been shown to increase the risk of a soya allergy, and like someone else said you don't want to end up allergic to soya as little bits of it are in everything!!!! More research needs to be done but best to errr on the side of caution. As other's have said, it's there to be used as a last resort as sometimes nothing else works!

Goats milk formula is available to buy online or in health food shops - look for nannycare, again it's not recommended in the UK but I couldn't really find any research on it, I think it's because cow's milk and goat's milk are so similar.

Good luck xx

yes in the case of CMPA goats milk is not recommended either; its a myth that goats milk and cows milk protein are so different. Goats milk formula was banned in the UK in 2005; due to being nutritionally inadequate I have read since that the food standards agency have reviewed this and say it probably is ok after all but they still haven;t seen enough research to recommend it. It is allowed to be sold now; but not recommended.

thanks guys. real nervous about this shes boob obsessed so not hopeful but i really dont wanna be feeding an older child as im only tiny myself and im struggling with bad health xxx

Just want to say that as others have said soya does have issues if it's the sole source of nutrition but as part of a varied solid food diet for older babies it's fine! Just don't over do it. A bit of tofu every so often is good for you. X
