Hi..

as some of you have read and followed my threads on the torment of colic my poor little guy is going through and despite using infacol and gripe water nothing was working...

well I went to docs and got infant gaviscon.. also swapped from tommee tippee to dr browns bottles.. and so far the tension in his gut seems to have reduced but not completely gone.

Now at the mo, he is on SMA Gold, since birth, but I bought some Easy Digest.. by Aptimil.
I hope that this will help with his griping problems also.

So do I just start on that? or do I gradually move over to it?
Dont wanna shock his digestive system if I can help it.. or will it not matter and wont hurt to change? anyone else change brands on their formula milk?
how do I go about doing this?
thanks in advance x

You can just change over my hv said, I went from sma gold to aptimal.

oh ok.. what just one day.. finish on the sma and next day just use the aptimil?

why did you change over btw?

You can just switch but I think they also say that you need to give it a week to see the difference. I used to give Isobel the easy comfort from birth (but predominately BF until 13weeks) then swapped to normal apatmil because she could cope with it.

I switched (10 years ago mind) from Farleys to Aptimal. I just used the bottles I'd made up already then made up the next batch with Aptimal. My two had no probs switching x

When i swapped Mia, I just swapped her over straight away as thats what my hv said to do.

I'm glad you asked this as my mum said i had done wrong going from SmA to cow and gate, so am sticking with SMA <-- hmm till maybe now after reading this!

The SMA gold is a bit stinky to me and the cow and gate smelled alot nicer, and she wolfed the whole 9oz carton so she must have liked it too. Think I'll be changing too once used up all the sma stuff.

Hope your lo setles down with the changes :)

yeah the Aptimil Easy Digest number 1 is coming tomorrow in my Asda online shop so I think I will just start with it straight away.. theres only about a quarter of a tub left of the SMA Gold.. may just put it away in the cupboard for emergencies. I'll put the date on it as it has to be used within 4 weeks of opening apparently.
The Aptimil is about 2 quid dearer but worth every penny if it helps his tender stomach. :)

Thanks everyone

i feed ruby the blue aptamil, but i have been eying up the easy digest in tesco too... the only thing thats put me off if that it says on the back that you will most likely see an increase in the looseness of babys stools.... that is something we REALLY dont need in this house so ive given it miss for now but would be interested to hear your opinions on it after using it for a while..... Ruby is still fed mostly EBM too so that keeps her stools loose i guess

When I used the Easy Digest, it didn't cause loose stools at all. One thing that it did change was the colour of it.. it went a greeny colour. I just think that it was because they make it easier for her tummy.

I did this for the same reasons, swapped from SMA to Cow and Gate Comfort because of terrible colic, no problems at all. HV said it's fine, the only difference maybe in the taste to baby, but if they like it then go ahead. I've had no problems at all and a much ahppier baby! x Good luck! x

Hiya,

Ive changed Lilah from SMA gold to Aptimil 1. I tried her on the easy digest, but she couldnt drink it as it is so thick. We tried bigger teats etc, but she wasnt having any of it. Back to aptimil 1 till today (iposted in other thread about lactose) We're trying SMA lactose free to see what happens. Oh the fun!!

Good luck xx

I noticed this today and watered it down a little cos Mylo seemed to be having difficulty sucking it through the teat! .. but watering down just a little with 20ml extra water seemed to work. Dont think hes keen on the new taste tho-now its taking me twice as long to feed him the easy digest stuff. Hope he doesnt start losing weight.. cos if we carry on.. they'll only be 7 feeds in 24 hours not the 8 he was waking for. saying that if its thicker it may keep him satisfied for longer.

Try him on a vari flow teat or a medium teat. It is thicker to make it easier to digest for them.

I changed as I thought LO was constipated. Although he wasn't and my hv said he was 'stretching his bowel' (more common in boys) which I dont fully understand still but he is over it, hv said wen babies are in the womb their bowel is long and thin and bowel stretching is making the bowel so baby doesnt poo so often, or something like that (google it im crap at explaining things) so anyway Samet seemed constipated and acted like he was struggling to poo but his poo was fine. But hv said it was fine to just change over straight away. x

well its all gone wrong.. the eaqsy digest isnt for him.. he wont drink it.. only very little. and today he cried and cried like he had colic again but without the gut wrenching.. turns out he was hungry and wouldnt drink the easy digest.. but the second I gave him the sma again he wolfed it down.. happily.. and went sound off to zzzzzzzzz land!..

so my point is that I have now this pot of easy digest!! I dont want to throw it away,..

Can I use it mixed in with the sma gold.. like 3 parts sma gold to 1 part easy digest??
what dya think?

hmm im not sure i would.. it might just be too much for his wee guts to take considering they are already sensitive.. you could try the aptamil blue? the cartons seem to be just the same as the powder so you could just get a few to try rather than buying a big tub...

I was suggested by my gastroenterologist (granted I am in the US) to actually mix it that way not to just switch over as it can be such a shock on the babies. I was told to start on 1 part of the new formula and 3 parts old wait 2 days then half and half and then see how they do and switch to 3 parts new 1 part old then switch completely and see how they do. The whole process should take about a week. Maybe try that if you feel comfortable with it...?

well it does make sense yes.. thanks

I did EXACTLY the same as you hun, minus swopping bottles.

We had Archie on SMA gold and he was really hungry, so swopped him to SMA white. HE went really colicy and constipated. So i swopped him to Aptimal easy digest and it seemed to loosen things up a little too well, so we kept him on that for couple of weeks (2 tubs approx) and then swopped him to Apitmal '2' hungry baby aswell as swopping him to size 2 teats with the tommy tippee bottles.

HE is fine now though and nice an settled, has 6 bottles in 24hrs of 6oz and sleeps from 9pm to about 6am :)
