Hello everyone.

I am a first time mum to a 17 week old baby girl

After 7 weeks of trying following her birth I finally managed to get her to latch on for her feeds. Prior to that I was expressing and giving her breast milk via a bottle. We are now at a point where she is still on breast milk but has half of her daily feeds in a bottle and half on the breast but still all breast milk but I fear we are getting to the point where my milk is not satifying her needs.

I am after some advice as to what formula you have used and would recommend. Some of my family members swear by SMA gold and other family members and friends have said Aptimil is best.

I am still happy breastfeeding her at the moment but would just like to weigh up the options before making the switch in the next few months.

Any advice and recommendations woudl be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Vikki

Hi there,

I highly recommend Aptamil, it is widely known to be closest to breastmilk and the easiest of the formulas to digest. I know some babies can tolerate SMA but I have heard of alot that have suffered with constipation and wind from it, I think It's supossed to be quite rich. My friend breastfeeds but will also give her daughter a bottle of formula at night, she uses Aptamil too :flower:

First of all, congratulations for breastfeeding as long as you have...!

I've been expressing my breastmilk for the last 5 weeks or so, as have recurrent and stubborn thrush which has caused me to lose most of the skin on my left nipple and persistent cracks in my right nipple. A couple of times, I've needed to supplement with formula (I mix breastmilk and formula together so it's less difficult to digest and closer to the taste he's used to.) I've used Hipp Organic formula, as was told it was the easiest to digest - although I've also heard good things about Aptamil. The thing is, Hip Organic is quite a bit cheaper than Aptamil, so if baby takes it fine then it's easier on your pocket too!!

Hey Hun, there is a BIG growth spurt about this time, if you increase demand then your supply will go up to and it settles back down after 2 weeks or so. We used c&g to supplement Ellis as I combined fed till around 5.5 months when we started fully ff. Everybabies different though so you may need to go through some different brands before finding one that works x

Hey Hun I was breatfeeding exclusively for 7 weeks but lil one just wasn't getting enough so now she is fully FF on Aptamil! I had already gottgis one just invade I couldn't breastfeed in the beginning but have been tole by MW and HV that this is the closest one to breartmilk. My lil one is thriving now :) xx

P.S. Well done on breastfeeding for so long xx

hipp organic is fabtastic milk and is ment to be very close to breast milk its not think and sweet like some of the other milks x

I also went for hipp organic. I used to BF and after buying several cartons to try I found hipp to taste the nicest and most like EBM (yes I did try them all)
It was also the best for LO digestion as it has things in to keep movement good and doesn't look as thick as other milks so never been constipated on it, unlike some other formulas we tried.

Hi well done on BF for so long. I use Aptamil as recommended by my HV x

Thanks everyone :)

At the LO's weight check today she was just on her growth line so I think we may need to switch sooner than I thought :( Im going to visit my HV at our next weight check and see what she thinks. I would love to carry on with the breastfeeding but if it means my little girl is not growing at the rate she should be then I will have to switch regardless of my feelings.

Will give the formula's that you have all recommended a try and see which one suits her :)
