My friend is over right now and is 30 weeks pregnant and wanted me to ask a question on this forum as she doesn't have a computer at home.

She says that she is worried about the effects of smoking the synthetic marijuana "K2" for 1 month during her second trimester. She says she smoked it during weeks 21 and 26 then stopped and has not smoked it since then. She also said that she has not done anything else during this pregnancy and does not smoke cigarettes.

I told her that being that she did it in the second trimester and only for about 6 weeks that probably nothing bad has happened since most of the important stuff happens during the first trimester but she is freaking out thinking that she could have caused her baby girl to lose a lot of brain cells?

Do you think that doing a synthetic marijuana drug like that could cause some kind of brain damage during the second trimester? Surely only 6 weeks of using it couldn't do that much right? As far as I know this stuff is relatively new so there hasn't been any studies done on how safe it is or whatever. I looked it up online and it is mainly a bunch of herbs and a chemical that mimics marijuana. What should I tell her?

I would have her discuss this with her OBGYN, I am an addictions therapist and that K2 spice is the absolute opposite of natural or healthy it's filled with a bunch of crap that no one really knows. I have had many patients end up in the ER after use with schizophrenic signs and end up in the mental health ward for days until they realize it was due to the k2 spice it also is known to have similar withdrawal symptoms as opiates. I am not trying to scare your friend but she should really really discuss this with her doctor.

The only thingyoure gonna get from this thread is an argument. No one on here is qualified to give you any info on this. She needs to discuss this with a Doctor. But it's honestly too late now. I'd tell her she should have asked the questions before she did it, not after.

Exactly this! Why on earth would she smoke it whilst pregnant!?!?!?!

I would seek advice from a professional your not going to get a lot of help on a forum as another lady said it will Just cause an argument. I do agree however with Egan my friend was a drugs advice worker and seen a lot of bad things from the herbal craze, dont think because it says herbal it won't cause harm they use this to dumb it down and make these things somehow legal to sell however most of these synthetic drugs are made in labs with tonnes of chemicals. I really do hope your friends baby is ok and she finds the help she needs.

Xx

My mum smoked cannabis whilst pregnant with me. I have asthma and have an awful memory.

I don't understand why she did it between weeks 21 and 26?! If she'd always used the drug that's more understandable but to select specific weeks in which to use it is baffling to me? And why did she stop once she's started? Because if she thought it would harm the baby she wouldn't have done it in the first place....very strange.

Like others have said, if I were her I would seek the advice of my doctor or midwife. K2 is illegal where I'm from - too many hospitalizations and deaths. It is loaded with tons of chemicals. A couple of friends of mine tried it and said they hated the affects. It is nothing like marijuana. I hope all is well with your friends baby.

Definitely have her talk to her doctor/midwife/ob/whoever. As babybrums said, K2 is absolutely nothing like marijuana and shouldn't be treated as such nor called synthetic marijuana, to me it is as bad as smoking a cigarette due to all the chemicals in it.

Smoking in any form is not good as it deprives you of oxygen and that is a concern during pregnancy.

Since it is a relatively new drug, I don't know of any studies regarding fetal transfer but I am guessing low birth weight might be an issue due to the potential oxygen deprivation. There could also be residual chemicals that transferred into the placenta depending on how much she was smoking. I don't know how it metabolizes but I'd advise her to ask a medical professional and to continue with healthy living.

i was wondering how the baby's health is if you wouldn't mind. I found out i was 8 weeks when i stopped smoking synthetic marijuana, not daily use until the week i found out. i am terrified because my baby's health means the world to me.

See your doctor.

Drugs are a definite no go, and a fee of my friends and my boyfriend smoke cannabis very very rarely but I make sure I'm not even around them and do something else.

It's bad enough having the occasional second hand smoke of regular cigarettes when outdoors.

Even then doctors probably don't come across many people doing drugs whilst pregnant and the outcome can be different for every baby. So I'm assuming they'll monitor the baby more.

It was very silly of her to start it up in second tri. Like if she's having a rough time, then seek help, don't turn to smoking, or worse, smoking a drug.

Get her to go to the doctor ASAP, hopefully it has not effected the baby, but pretty much what we do, baby does.

I tried to do some of my own research, and honestly, it doesn't look good. I couldn't find anything where it ever says that it's okay to do it while pregnant.

Here are a couple articles for your friend, if she wants to read through them. Best of luck to her & her baby.

Good thing not an actual member is asking these questions. It's a mess when they do. :|

My opinion is that she's better off smoking actual marijuana than the fake stuff.
Good luck.

^What Rinna said. I've used K2 spice (waaaaay before my pregnancy) and it gave me seizures that I still occasionally get. She'd have been better off with regular marijuana exposure. She should definitely talk to her doctor. They can do extra ultrasounds and be prepared when the baby is born to look for health issues.

Since it's such a new drug, I don't think they even know the effects yet. They don't even know the long term affects on full-grown adults, let alone an unborn baby.

Synthetic marijuana has sooooo many man-made chemicals in it and it's only been around a few years, and the formula changes regularly in order to bypass laws in certain countries. It seems like a gamble.

But what's done is done. Just tell her NEVER to do it again. If there were any mitigating factors, it's that she was in the second trimester, so all the baby's major organs were already in place. Also, she stopped smoking it, so maybe the baby will recover! Just keep an eye on your friend and make sure she stays clean for the next few months and encourage her to go to treatment or NA meetings, if she needs to.

Honestly, I'm with the rest of these ladies. If it were actually Marijuana, the risks are very low (and debatable, but I'll save my "pro-pot" speech.) There is nothing natural or safe about K2 even when smoked while not being pregnant. I'd be seriously worried if I were in that situation. She could ask her doctor, but to be honest, if there is damage, there's not much that could be done at this point other than raising a red flag to CPS. I'm going to try to not be judgey here, but at 20+ weeks, she clearly knew she was pregnant and made the choice to smoke that poison anyway. I do hope for the best that her baby ends up happy and healthy. Fingers crossed that everything turns out alright...
