Just when we thought it was getting better, my son's acid reflux has taken a turn for the worse. It seems like he can't keep anything down these days. He was initially prescribed Zantac, which helped some, but three months later, stopped working for him. He was then prescribed Omeprazole, which really helped for a couple months. Now, however, not even that is helping him. His pediatrician recommended that we bring him to a pediatric gastroenterologist. I made an appointment for him to see one tomorrow. Has anyone else had to bring their little ones to a gastroenterologist? If so, what can I expect on the first visit?

I have no advice or experience but good luck and I hope you get some useful information. <<3

Thanks, ladies! I liked the doctor, but unfortunately, we don't have a concrete answer for everything that has been going on with my little guy. We do know that he had a stomach virus on top of everything else, so it wasn't just the reflux that was making him throw up. The doctor suspects that he also has some sort of food protein allergy that is upsetting his digestive tract. The most common type is a cow's milk protein allergy. So, I am eliminating dairy out of both of our diets, and am planning to switch him to a hypoallergenic formula that the doctor recommended very soon (the doctor suggested that we do that after he's 100% over his stomach virus). I'll bring him back to the specialist next week. In the meantime, I have to bring his stool samples to the lab for testing. We also changed his reflux medicine. Hopefully, we'll get this all squared away very soon!

Glad you liked the doctor and have some next steps to take! <3

Hi! I feel we are in a similar boat, and may be heading to a similar doctor after our appointment next week.

My little guy is 6 weeks and since birth he has been on three different formulas with little improvement. He has terrible gas cramps, difficulty pooping and vomiting. He also has reflux, which we are on Zantac for. Now I am starting to notice mucus in his poop so I think we are dealing with some sort of allergy. I feel so bad as he just can't get comfy

Out of interest, did he have to have any antibiotics right after his birth at all? Friend of mine's son had HORRIFIC reflux and basically reeked of acid :( for the first year of his life, and they suspected the antibiotics had wiped out ALL the bacteria in his body, including the good bacteria in his gut. Probiotics (among other things) helped him by replacing some of those cultures. He's now a perfectly healthy kid - it got better around his first birthday I think.
