Hi,
My baby was bon with unilateral talipes. It was picked up at the 20 week scan.I knew nothing about it and was just devestated that something was 'wrong'
They were unsure how severe it was or how much treatment she would need.
When she was born her foot was twisted at about 90 degrees to her leg and would not flex.
She was seen at 10 days old by the physiotherapists and started treatment by the ponseti method.( i think this method of treatment is quite common now in most hospitals)
Sophie was put into plaster cast from her thigh to her toes which were changed weekly for 6 weeks. She had a small operation to cut her achilies tendon to release her foot.
She then went into boots & bar which is like a little skateboard! her feet are in little boots which are attached to a bar hip distance apart.
She wore the boots and bar for 23 hours a day for 3 months and is now in it for just 14 hours a day(overnight and nap times) She wil wear this until she is about 5 years old.
I have to say though that Sophie's talipes was quite severe and it is quite common that they just need physio and do not have to go through the ponseti treatment.
Sophie's feet look brilliant now you can hardly tell the difference between her affected and her unaffected foot. The boots and bar are just worn to stop the foot from relapsing.
PM me if you want any more info and I will be happy to email you pics of Sophie's feet/treatment etc.
Also I found the STEPS website to be a really useful for info and help. They are a charity for people with feet and hip conditions. they have a good forum and are very helpful.
Good luck with your pregnancy
