I'm only 16 weeks but would love a little tattoo on my wrist I got
Pregnant quickly with this baby so the tattoo I wanted has been put on hold for a while.

Has anyone had a tattoo while pregnant or know of someone who got it done?

As someone who has and loves tattoos and wants another, every thing I have read says no you can't get one while pregnant :( I'm in Australia tho so maybe it's different else where

Unfortunately, most of the time no one will tattoo you while you're pregnant. Most of the time the waiver you sign mentions that you can't be pregnant if you're getting one. I have wings on my back, and had to put the shading on my one that's not done until after I have my bub's!

I didn't think they allowed you to get tattoos while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Personally I really wouldn't think it was worth it.

It thins ur blood when the ink goes in ur skin and cause shock that's what I got told by a tattooist he wouldn't do it x

The number 1 reason is the shock, even small tattoos aren't recommended. In fact, most places won't even due piercings if they know you are pregnant because of the stress it puts on the body.

Other reasons are infection, ink blood poisoning, fainting, and lowering your immune system which pregnancy already does to begin with.

I would say this is a big no. It'd be one thing if you didn't know you were pregnant but it is a bit selfish to actually do it, especially if you're informed about the risks to your baby's health.

I have some big tattoos and I had to go back for some shading. And the tattooist said even though I can sit there like a champion he can't tattoo me while I am pregnant because it can cause shock and cause me to lose the baby / go into labour early.

I never thought anything of it (that it could affect you) because I'm use to it and don't think it hurts at all, but apparently it causes a negative reaction in pregnancy.

I waited till baby was here and got her name tattooed on me too. And after this baby is born I have an excuse to go back for another.

Best to wait till baby is here :)

I wouldn't even consider it after the comments above. It will be something to look forward to after birth x

I surpose it's best to wait thanks ladies I've been waiting to get this tattoo for about 2 years so will get but done straight after I've after I've had LO xx

I have a friend who is a tattooist, and he said that no decent tattooist will ink you whilst you are pregnant, and you shouldn't get a tattoo for a year after the baby is born xx

This is a big no-no. I own a tattoo studio and one of the questions on the health questionnaire you fill in before getting anything (tattoo or piercing) is whether you could be pregnant, and if the answer is yes, the form goes in the bin and we tell you to come back after the baby is born! (Ideally not within the first six months and not while you're breastfeeding)

Even though a person may not find it painful, tattooing still puts a huge stress on the body, it is a big skin wound basically and then needs to heal. The main reason against it is the risk of introducing infection into your body, especially as your immune system is reduced due to pregnancy (same goes for piercing, even more so as they take a lot longer to heal than a tattoo). You also may not react the same way you usually would to the ink, so colours may not look the way they should or you may be sensitive to it even if you're not usually, which can cause ink to reject and your tattoo to look patchy. Your body is already under a huge amount of pressure, growing a new human being, so you want to avoid putting any further stress on it if you can!

I did actually get both tattooed and pierced in the very early stages of this pregnancy, before I knew. Three months later, the tattoo has only just healed (they usually take 2-3 weeks) and the piercings show no signs of settling down anytime soon!

I wouldnt just to be safe. Although everything could be ok, but if they knew you was pregnant they'd probably refuse. I want 1 laserd off but im having to wait i wouldnt risk it xx

Really, not while breastfeeding? Argh... I have all my kids names and wanted to get this next ones name as soon as possible after the birth. BUt I plan to breastfeed for at least a year. Do you have to wait for 6 month after breastfeeding as well, or can you get it as soon as you stop?

I wouldn't whilst I was pregnant but I did get LO's name done whilst I was BF. I think she was about 4 months old at the time.
The ink is too big to get into your milk. I think the biggest risk is that it could become infected. As long as the place is reputable and you ensure they use new, steralised needles, make sure it's all very very clean and you look after it properly I don't think there's anything wrong with it.
Mine was fine, never got infected and never affected LO.

My tattooist won't touch me with a barge pole now I'm pregnant, he said I'll have to wait until after breastfeeding has finished too. It's the concern of the ink carrying anything into the body. So although you may well find a place that WILL do it I would say please please wait.

It's recommended to wait - most tattooists will not tattoo a breastfeeding mother, again, it's the risk of infection. As soon as you stop, your body is your own again. The six-months guideline is to let your body recover from pregnancy and birth so wouldn't apply to bf.

That said, I personally would and do get tattooed while breastfeeding - I know our studio is clean and I know how to care for my tattoo afterwards so infection doesn't really concern me. We refuse anyone we know to be still breastfeeding but the guys know better than to say no to the boss :haha:

I've been tattooed while breastfeeding - its a far lower risk.
But any tattooist worth their salt wouldn't touch you, while pregnant - if they agree to - you're in the wrong place.

I think I will wait till I am done BFing. I want the name in red like the others and from what I understand that is a small molecule so I don't want to risk any ink getting through. I am not to worried about infection because it will small and thin (it is part of a larger tat that I already have done), the other names healed right up in the blink of an eye.

I don't think waiting 9+ months to get a tattoo you can get anytime in your life is that difficult when you are Expecting. Not a big sacrifice...
