Hi, from reading a different post am I now confused about the tax and NI I am paying on my SMP. After tax and NI has been taken I am getting 98pound per week.

(Now the confusing bit). I was employed through a recruitment agency from Oct 08 - Jul 09 on a part time temp contract. In July 09 the company I was temping for took me on full time, perm (knowing that I was due in Oct 09) so I was no longer employed through the agency. When it came to MA & SMP I applied for MA but because I hadn't been at the full time job long enough but got a letter saying I could claim SMP from the agency.

Anyway, just checked my payslip for SMP (from the agency) and my tax code shows as BR. On the tax website this gives an explanation of - Is used when all your income is taxed at the basic rate - currently 20 per cent (most commonly used for a second job or pension). But I only have one job not two so this could explain why I am being taxed so much.

Any ideas what I should do as seems I have been paying too much tax & NI?

I would just contact your HR/payroll department and ask them to look into it.

if you are being taxed at the basic rate, yo may be entitled to a tax rebate.
NI is worked out differently and is not related to tax.
speak to your payroll as mentioned above, they will readjust as neccesary and you'll get the difference paid in the next month, ie a nice big bonus

I was on BR when I was working at my last job and was paying about twice as much tax as I should've been!! I just had to put in a form to claim back any tax owed to me (and to tell them I'm living outside the country now..)... It may be worth ringing up your tax office and asking them if you're on the correct tax code, if not they should offer to send out a form or something to claim back any tax owed back to you.

xx

I would ring your tax office too. Cut out the payroll department seeing as they were the ones to put you on this code in the first place. You may get answers quicker then too!!

yeah its emergency tax, which happens when the info isnt passed from the payroll to the tax office and you should be entitled to a rebate.
Contact the payroll at the agency, tell them to pass on info ASAP then contact the tax office and explain the situation and they should be able to sort it as soon as they receive the info.

Thanks everyone. I have contacted payroll at my current employer, payroll at the agency as they seem to be the ones with the wrong code and been trying to ring HMRC since yesterday. FIngers crosssed.

Just spoken with the tax office and the agency are using the wrong code. Now got to wait until P60 details have been sent through to tax office before I can apply for a refund - bonus! Bit annoying though as been struggling on 98pound each week whereas the extra would have made things much more managable.
