hi, im so confused about tax credits and child tax credits. i had a baby last july and so i applied for child tax credits and my partner applied for working tax credits back in december and about 6 weeks had gone by and i hadnt heard anything so i gave them a ring and they said they sent us a form to send bk which we never recieved so they had rejected our claim and we then reapied in feb and then we get out award notice through saying we are not entitled as our income for the tax year of april 2012 to april 2013 is to high. so i have to let them know our income for this year after april 5th. i dont get it though as we need the money now? we are no longer on a high income. are you not entitled to child tax credits regardless of what your income is?

please help

love louise

Hi Louise,

No unfortunately you aren't entitled no matter what your income is however you do need to let them know that this years income will be less than last years and that might make a difference.

Your best bet is to make an appointment with one of the advisors at the council face to face and take all of your details with you.
They usually base it on last years income however you can ask them to look at your current year but if you get it wrong you may end up owing some money.

Alternatively make an appt at the cab they should be able to help you fill out the forms and give you some advice.

Good luck
xx

My income on my P60 for tax year 2012/13 was much higher than my actual income now so I phoned them, they told me i needed to fill in the form with my income from my P60 then phone them about 2 weeks later to give my updated income so that's what I did and they recalculated the amount that I was entitled to. They said I'll get a form from them to complete my actual income from my P60 for this tax year once we go into the new tax year.

my sister claims as their income went down quite a lot. she gave them a predicted wage for this year, rather than going on last year.

i would advise over estimating though as if you underestimate, you will owe money back x
