Tax credits question?

What are they? And do you have to be a certain age to get them?
I have just started a job and I only earn 780 a month before.tax, OH doesn't work so we are relying on my income solely and.things are REALLY tight.
I don't know if im entitled to any help but I'm worrying about what we're going to do.
I also won't get my first wage untill 12th August, and I really don't know what we're going to do.untill then! We have no savings as.we've just come off job seekers allowance.
Can anyone shed some light on my situation? x
