So I'm finally a mummy! Here's my birth story:

So I was due on the 22nd Feb. The day came and went, with no signs whatsoever of her making a move. I had my last appointment on Friday the 26th in the hospital, who booked me in for induction at term+ 8, which would have been tomorrow (1st March). She also gave me a sweep which I didn't hold out much hope for.

Immediately after the sweep I was feeling really really crampy and the lo in my tummy would NOT settle down at all! Did not stop kicking and wriggling for the next day! So on Saturday afternoon at around 4 I lost half my show, and then the other half at around 5. Although this was exciting, I didn't get too hopeful as I know this can happen and mean absolutely nothing. So we went to bed and I had a feeling in my gut that something would happen that night. I just knew. I awoke at around 4am for no apparent reason and just lay there in bed. About an hour later I got up to go to the loo and had only sat down when GUUUUUUUUSH! Away my waters went! After wiping, I saw that they were definitely green so phoned the hospital straight away and was told to go in immediately. We arrived there at about 6 o'clock, and a midwife tested to see if it was definitely my waters (which it was). A doctor then put a needle in my arm in case I needed an IV and checked my cervix. I was told it was only 1-2cms and still quite high up, but was told I'd be staying in!

So we were escorted to a delivery suite (the last one available!) and met a midwife called Carol who explained what would be happening, I would either get the gel and then a drip to start contractions, or go straight on the drip. A doctor came in and as I had meconium in my waters it was decided that I would be going straight on the drip. So this was hooked up at around 10am and we sat there until about 1pm with nothing happening. I decided to sit in a rocking chair for a while, and when I went to get up all of a sudden I got a contraction! It just felt like a very strong period cramp. These started coming thick and fast so I went on G&A at around 2pm. At around this time, another midwife and her student came in and introduced themselves. They checked my cervix at around 3pm, and it was 3cm but had shortened down a lot so things were definetly progressing. The contractions were getting extremely painful by now, and were a minute apart, so I requested an epidural. The anesthatist came in after a few minutes and started sorting it out and popped it in my back, but 30 mins later it still hadn't taken effect so they checked my cervix again, which was now 9cm!! 3-9 in under an hour! We were all shocked! At this point I started freaking out because I realised I would have to deliver this baby with no pain relief! But by this time I was feeling the urge to push so up went the stirrups. It took me a good few pushes because I kept letting her head slip back in a wee bit And all the birth videos I've seen, once the head comes out, the baby stops at the neck and then it takes another big push to get the body out... this was not the case with me- once the head came out, the rest of her just spilled out! And I started crying my eyes out! I couldn't believe it! I had hit a total mental wall when I couldn't get the head out, I honestly did not believe I could physically do it.

So then the doctor came back in to have a look and stitch me up as I tore a little. Nobody ever tells you they stick a finger up your bum to check if there's any damage! lmao! so after I got stitched they put a catheter in as although the epidural ended up not giving me any pain relief, it can still numb certain nerves without you realising and they didn't want me peeing all over myself lol! so they gave me a bed bath and was then taken to the ward.

I can't believe 2 days ago this little woman was in my tummy and now she's screaming the house down hehe!

I had a brilliant birthing experience, but next time would request an epi earlier! lol! still cant believe i did the lot on only g&a!
