Hello everyone. Sorry it's been a while but I've really struggled to find the time since little one came along, especially with another four to look after! She arrived on 28th December at 39+4 days pregnant, which came as a bit of a shock as I was expecting to go overdue.
I'd woken the day before with slightly wet knickers. I thought it a little odd but had a strong feeling my waters had ruptured, (no contractions) however when I mentioned it to the birthing unit a few hours later, the midwife thought it more likely to be discharge but told me I'd need to get checked anyway. After spending a few hours in the hospital they agreed my waters had gone and because I hadnt gone into labour, booked me in for induction the following day. They encouraged me to get moving around the hospital to see if I could start things off. A few hours later at about 11pm, after a big bloody show but no real contractions, we gave up and came home. I managed to get two hours sleep but then was too uncomfortable to stay in bed. I was having week contractions every ten minutes or so throughout the early hours which got no worse but because it was my fifth baby and the last had come quickly and we were due for induction in the morning anyway, we headed back in. On arrival at the hospital I noticed one long strong contraction, which baby moved throughout (not nice!) after that they were as before, not too regular or too painful. We went into triage, and I saw a midwife there who told me I was not in labour (according to my facial expression!) and we're sent to maternity to await a midwife who would discuss my induction with me. I was taken to a bed on a ward and had a few more contractions which I noticed were slightly stronger but not bad. I was listening to music at the same time and was happily 'zoned out' throughout them. When the midwife came in she said she hoped my body was gearing up for labour and with luck I wouldn't need inducing. She then asked me to lie down to be monitored. I protested as I was uncomfortable and wanted to be upright but she said it was important and would only take half an hour. I asked to lie on my side which she said was fine and then she left. I had three strong and very long contractions after this but all about seven minutes apart. The monitor registered nothing! After about fifteen minutes of this I told hubby I needed the loo, and had had enough. I ripped the belts off and waddled to the loo, where I suddenly announced " I can feel her head!" The midwife overheard as she came back in, looked sceptical and said I'd need an examination if that was the case. This took some persuading but I gave in finally. All I heard was, "she's right, she's fully" and my hubby say "she normally is! "
Then I heard " try not to push, we're going to try to get you round to delivery." Luckily I hadn't as yet felt an urge to push so we made it through maternity and down the lift to delivery. Once there, I got off the bed felt a gush, when baby crowned. Once her head emerged I felt a bit of tugging where the cord was tight around her neck but she emerged barely crying and was passed through my legs and placed on the bed. She was born at 11.20 am weighing 7lb 13oz. It was the most wonderful delivery, shockingly quick but remarkably easy as far as pain goes. From turning up at the maternity ward to being confirmed as fully dilated was no longer than half an hour. No pain relief, just music. Perfect.
I'm struggling to work out how to upload a picture from the iPad so I'll ask my hubby later and update with it. Thanks for reading.xxxxx
The second picture was when she was only a few minutes old, having first cuddles with daddy and covered in vernix. The other was taken on the ward afterwards. They're in the wrong order, sorry!
