Hello, So I am now 24 weeks with my first and we found out at my last midwife appointment the other day that they had found a choroid plexus cyst on the 20 weeks ultrasound. :nope:

Obviously, I am terrified! Apparently these are relatively common (about 1% of babies show them at 20 weeks) and my midwife assured me that it is most likely benign and that most of the time they resolve themselves, but they can be a marker for certain genetic disorders (mainly trisomy 18). I have to go for a level II ultrasound next month to check if the cyst has shrank or grown and if there are any more. They are also going to look for any other markers of genetic disorder and if there are I will need to have an amnio.

I'm really scared! My midwife was very reassuring and everything I have read online tended to be positive too, but my mind keeps drifting over to the worst case scenarios. I don't know how I would cope if my son has trisomy 18, the prognosis is awful.

Have any of you ladies had experience with these cysts?

I didn't want to read and run, but if it helps, 80% of babies that have trisomy 18 are girls, and you're expecting a boy, so the chances are quite low hopefully for you, and may help you not to worry as much over the next few weeks.

If the midwives not worried then I really would take that on board and try to stay clear of google if possible! It'll only make you worry more than nessarcary!

My fingers are crossed, I hope the next scan turns out fine, keep us updated xxx

When we went for our ultrasound with my son, I was 18w4d. I didnt know any of this until I spoke with my doctor after the scan but the tech found a cyst on his brain. Because of that she made sure to look at his hands and see if they would open, fingers spread. Apparently if the cyst meant trisomy or other things he wouldn't have been able to open his hand. So because of that my doctor said they weren't concerned at all, it was fairly common, and would resolve itself. We never did anymore checking on it. He's now 2 and a happy healthy little boy. I wouldn't worry yet at all! Keep us updated after your next scan. <3

I've had this show up on my sons ultrasound but because my IPS screening showed up negative for anything my midwife told me not to worry about it at all and the majority of them resolve themselves or cause no problems at all. My baby is healthy and happy, when it happened I also found out a coworker and a coworkers sister had this result and it resolved itself too. More common than you think. :hugs:

I've not had experience with this but I just wanted to leave you my well wishes, hon. I'm sure everything will be benign and that it'll all turn out okay. I know it's hard and that you're worrying now but try to think positive. :hugs:

There is a relatively new blood test out now that can tell you with 99% accuracy whether baby has downs or trisomy. It's offered here in the US to high risk women. Can you request this test? It's marketed under Harmony, Panorama, Verifi, MaterniT21. They are now able to isolate fetal DNA from the mother's blood and look at babies chromosomes to see if there are any problems. (I've had the test myself). This test is much less invasive than an amnio as it's a simple blood draw.

I had a baby with a cyst in its brain but it was an arachnoid cyst and was due to triploidy which is not compatible with life. When I was going through this experience I dida lot of research and found lots of info on CP cysts and ypur doc is right that they do usually disappear all by themselves and cause no problems. Many people discover them at a scan and they by their next scan they have gone.
I will be thinking about you and I hope your outcome is positive.

Xxx

Hi Hun, I'm a sonographer. Choroid plexus cysts are really common. We actually don't mention them in our reports unless they are multiple or not an isolated finding.

As an isolated finding, they are benign and usually resolve. Trisomy 18 babies normally have significant other problems so if they didn't find anything else, I'm sure bub will be fine! :) xxxxx
