Maia has done something strange this weekend and it's really freaking me out.

She tenses up her upper body and face and her head shakes from side to side, literally just for two or three seconds.

She's never done it before but did it yesterday while I was playing with her and did it in her high chair today when I was about to give her pudding.

She was normal before and immediately after.

Any ideas what's going on? Is it just excitement or something much worse?

It sounds like excitement. Evie went thru a phase of doing this, but it soon passed once she was able to express her excitement in other ways :)

my lo does something similar she clenches her fist too - ive no idea what it means but a few other people have said their kids do it too.

Abigail used to do something like this, she hasn't for ages but I think it was just something she realised she could do!

with my lo im sure its more anger/frustration

Yup I've seen that in Evie too! It's quite alarming the first few times you see them do it but they do grow out of it :)

Mine do it now because they think its funny. Harriet will say "look mummy we're getting angry" then they laugh lol

We also had those when he was younger to show anger.

my son started doing this about a month ago and i found it hilarious. when he does it he looks like the hulk. im a dad though so i can understand how it could worry you. wish i could help.

Thanks for replying guys, I do have a sense of relief now.
Thanks also to LTEx and BethK who replied on the other thread which has been deleted as a duplicate.
BethK we are going through hell with teething right now and it crossed my mind it could be a pain response.
LTEx I may well phone for some advice tomorrow just for ultimate peace of mind. May keep an eye on her and record the behaviour as BethK did to be sure they know what I mean.
Thanks again :)

the first time she did it i thought she was having a fit then realised that it couldnt be as she was fine before and after. I just laugh when she does it now or tell her to calm down lol

zakk does this sometimes. he clenches his fists and grimaces.

when he was under 1 he started doing this when he was eating and it got really scary and we ended up being reffered to paeds at the local hospital as they thought something was happening like sandifers.

turns out it was bugger all and he just stopped doing it.

however - they wanted to know some key facts.

had his development stopped or reversed?
how was he after? did he have to recover or was he ok right away?
did his eyes roll when he did it?

so in a nutshell we went quite a long way investigating this and it turned out to be nothing. plus found out that if it was a fit or anything you would see a range of issues... not just fist clenching.

Beatnick that's really useful to know. Maia was doing it again tonight when she was (supposed to be) drinking her milk. She bit hard on the handles and spout of her cup, again making me think of teething pain. She was fine before and after and no eyes rolling. Developmentally she is spot on too, which is a relief.
It's so strange that there was no cause for Zakk. Why on earth do they do these things?! Glad he's stopped now though and everything's ok :)

It's terrifying though isn't it? Glad you can laugh it off now - that's where I want to be

unfortunately it is now followed by a toy being launched across the floor !!

they thought zakk initially had sandifers which is a very bad form of acid reflux. it may have been that. his clenching lasted about 10 seconds (a really bloody long time when you are watching)

my friends boy does the same and crushes food when he does it!

Can you see that?

That's the video of my LO doing it, she was a lot younger then but that's when it started and that's the video i showed my doctor.

She still does it the same now but more of a shiver to it too.

Thanks, yes I could see it. Maia has more of a shiver too. She's done it today when I brought out her afternoon snack and she's actually done a similar thing since when we were having 'technical issues ' with her sippy cup and I had to take it off her to fix it.
It definitely seems to happen when there's food and drink about and after the sippy cup incident I wonder if it's impatience more than excitement. I'm going to have a word with the HV's when I take her to be weighed I think just to make sure.

L does it when she thinks something is fabulous!
