This may be ridiculous.....

^Yes I too have this fear. My sister in law was overdue (although she did end up going into spontaneous labour) and when her placenta was born it was over half dead and black. I only thought this happened with some people who smoke during pregnancy but she hasn't ever touched a fag in her life. May be completely unrelated to her being overdue but it has stuck with me!!

Hi Beadette, just wanted to say as you might find it of interest. Often placentas that are described as you have above, this could be because of an undiagnosed partial abruption where the placenta had partially seperated previous to birth, therefore resulting in the blackness of the unattached part. Of course this isn't an issue when labour, baby etc goes well. Placentas that come out like this are usually just documented in the notes. So she may have not realised, just a thought.
