i have never quite understood why they say not to tickle a baby under 2 months (i think) i just don't understand why, i was told its because they cant react to it yet, but why is that a problem.. by tickling i don't mean full on armpit/belly tickling, i just mean like gentle tickling of the feet..

also when do babies begin to laugh at this, my 7 week old just pulls his feet away, he doesn't laugh or smile though

People used to say to me that you shouldn't tickle a young babies feet because they can't reach them to scratch if they itch?! Lol. No idea but a few people said it hah!

hahaha i never heard that one before.. i was once told it can kill a baby because they cant laugh, i dont know how, something to do with them gasping for air or something :s

My boys didn't enjoy being tickled probably until like 6-9 months at least, I can't remember exact age. Definitely older baby age though. I would think with a young baby, its just as you've been told. They can't react properly to it, so if the sensation bothers them, they may not have the reflexes yet to move away or to get you to stop doing it. An older baby will squirm away if he/she doesn't like it.

No idea why you shouldn't tickle a newborn but my lo has been laughing at tickles since he was 3 months!

Both boys have loved being tickled since they could smile/laugh. Babies are usually pretty good at telling you if they don't like something......!

DD has had ticklish feet since the day she was born. If we ever tickled her feet, she'd just kick her feet to kick us away. The GP tickled her feet at her 6w check up to check her reflexes.

Its just a thing that's went around... Just like when ur pregnant ur not allowed to put ur arms above your head.....

It was 2-3 months before I got a full on laugh. That's when he really started smiling really big, as well.

I was never told not to tickle early on, it just didn't get a reaction so I didn't bother.

I was told never to tickle a babies feet as it would give them a stutter! Lol. x

HAHA thats funny, never heard that one, i recently read its good to tickle babies feet as it helps them realise they are there? helps them understand they are their feet and makes them aware. not sure how true this is though!
