Hi just looking to see if anyone has any advice. The other day my mum had my daughter while i was at work but she had phoned to say she wasnt very well. I had already said to my boss when i got to work that had been unwell and i may have to go home early to pick her up. I asked if i could leave, only 1 hour early, and was told i could only leave if i make the hour up. I am unable to do an extra hour any other day due to childcare etc so i had to stay. I wasn't expecting to get paid for the time off.

Just wondering if anyone know where i stand if i do ever have to take a full day off, will i have to work a different day, which wouldn't be possible. I am contracted to 24 hours/3 days a week.

Any advice would be appreciated x x

U can take emergency domestic leave which a sick child comes under, my daughter ha chicken pox and had to miss a day of work, I could either make up hours or have unpaid. I am sure this is the case with most companies x

Thanks hun thats what i thought. I could understand if i want paying, then yes i would have to make my hours up but i was happy to take it unpaid as i just wanted to get home. My boss just kept saying im contracted to 24 hours so have to work them!! As you can tell most of them dont have kids so haven't a clue!!!

My work will either give me the option of having the time unpaid or working it back xx

You are allowed time off for dependants - basically it is emergency unpaid leave if you are stuck with childcare etc

https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/Employees/Timeoffandholidays/DG_10026555

If you are going to be off for a few for example if your LO is ill and you need to look after them you can have parental leave. This is unpaid but you are allowed up to 13 weeks a year off

Attached some links for you to look at Xx

With children under 5 years of age you are basically "protected" as sorts and can take emergency leave if your child is sick or you have childcare issues. This can be made up or you can take it as unpaid.

IF it becomes a regular occurance they can start investigation & disciplinary but have to be understanding to your issues (but if it's your childminder letting you down all the time then they have the right to ask you to make alternative arrangements etc).

Read your employee handbook if you have one, or ask your HR dept if you have one. They are usually very good.:winkwink:
