Tips for Transitioning DD 2 year old to Toddler Bed?

My son is 2 yrs and 3 months and recently learned to climb out of his crib. We are trying to transition him to a toddler bed with a guard rail but he will not stay in the bed at all! I can't really explain it to him as he doesn't understand and am not sure if there is anything I can do to make this easier. If I put a baby gate at his door he is forever throwing his pacifier over the gate and screaming. if I close the door he bangs on it and screams. if i sit in the room with him he calms but will not go to sleep and this will go on for hours! Any tips??
