well, got any?

Other than breathing calmly, what else did you do in the hospital to calm down and keep people away from you during labor?
I have an extreme hospital phobia, and don't trust this particular hospital anyway, so I'm going to naturally be on guard.
What can I do?

i told them to leave me to it that i would call them if i needed something lol and focused on me put on my mp3 player and my tens and went into my own little world in my head

^^^That's what I plan on doing too. Putting my earbuds in and going off into my own little world... There will be quite a few people in the room (DH, and our moms), so I know that's a way I'll be able to 'be by myself' with them actually there. I'm not there to entertain them, lol.

Writing a detailed birth plan will help inform your caregivers of your wishes and desires for your labour and birth.

If you want to learn to 'zone' out, then using hypnotherapy techniques might be useful - there are methods specifically for pregnancy such as hypnobabies and the Mongan Method

Having a very supportive birth partner who can speak on your behalf if you are concentrating on contractions, and who will make sure your wishes are adhered to is also of great benefit

I kept locking myself in the bathroom! And would have my mum and OH shouting at me through the door coz they were worried! Lol

To calm down, breathe! Seriously, it helps! Not that silly breathing, but normal deep breaths. As for getting them away from you - I don't know how, just ignore them!, the 2nd midwife I had, I completely ignored her, she wanted me to lie on the bed and monitor me the whole time, I REFUSED to lie down, the pain was unbearable lying down and the other midwife was happy to monitor me sitting up so why couldn't she!

I just ignored everyone and went off into my own little world. I had very good MWs and they sensed that and pretty much left me to labour on my own. They only really stayed in the room when i was pushing.

Thanks Ladies.
This actually makes me feel a lot better.
I think I might be just scared of other birth stories and such.
I need to stop listening to other people.
My baby, my birth!

I am a nurse and generally if a patient tells me that they will let me know if they need anything, and they need some rest, I take that as a point to leave them alone. I know during labor is a different story b/c they have a certain amount of monitoring they have to do, but I think if you are up front and keep insisting you will call when you need something and keep your door shut they will leave you alone!

It helped for DH and I to be on the same page about everything. If he felt I wasn't being listened to, he would speak up and reiterate our position. If they didn't listen to me they did listen to DH.

Just thought I would share, in hospital still and I ended up having to kick people out! I had a section but that night and the next day every 45 min someone was in waking me or LO and OH. And most are a little rude about it. All 3 of us were sleeping and one comes in turns on the lights and starts rambling on about something that could have waited. I was asleep and clearly not awake enough to pay attention! I finally had to start telling them, unless it was something urgent like checking b/p or something; come back later or I will call you when it is more convenient!

My midwifes were fab they just left me to it until the contractions got more intense they'd pop in every so often to ask if I needed anything i'd tell them no and she'd go back off again she was only really there right at the end and just sat writing notes until I was ready to push at some point during pushing another midwife came into the room as I think they have to have 2 in the room when the birth actually takes place I growled at her and told her I didnt want her there using some not very nice language :-S she did stay and just sat back out of the way and I apologised afterwards but I did feel that they left me to do my own thing until I really needed them :-) If you want to be left alone just tell them how you feel and let them know that you will call for them when you feel you need them or things get too much but they will need to come in just to check on you at times I hate hospitals too but felt very secure and at home with them and got to leave 6 hours later anyway so was over and done with quite quickly xx

Stay at home as long as you feel comfortable as you'll be most relaxed there. To be honest in hospital I felt a little ignored, think I was too calm!!

I second the hypnobirthing, it can really help to relax you in labour, the CDs are good and I got mine from ebay for a bargain.

Another vote for Hypnobirthing/Hypnobabies here! With both I was so zoned out I didn't hear the nurses come in or anything at all really. DH and our other support ppl took care of everything that wasn't urgent. Both were born no meds in under 7 hours, start to finish.

Make sure your birthing partner knows your wishes and make sure they will speak up for you in case you can't. I was so out of it on gas and air that I probably ignored everyone and zoned out anyway. The midwife wasn't all over me and she was in and out the room most of the time apart from when I was pushing which is obviously when I needed her so as long as everything goes ok, you shouldn't be smoothered by midwifes or doctors either.

Labouring in the birth pool is a good way of not being bothered for many examinations as you'd have to keep getting out.

Both times I was in the labour ward, we were pretty much left to it until the pushing stage. The mw would pop in every hour or so to check on us (if we wanted more water and listen to LO's heartbeat) but that was about it.

The midwives kept monitoring my son's heartbeat everytime I finished having a contraction/pushing. I knew why they were doing it but couldn't bear to be touched so in after lots of pleading I called them cnuts  worked though!

some midwifes can be really pushy so either u or ur birthing partner has to no what u want and stand ur ground!
i had a homebirth with baby 2 and the midwife still tried to push me to do what she wanted and my mum said no she wants this or that and i told her no when she was trying to get me to push and i didnt want to.

i had my first in hospital and was treated like crap but i was basicaly left alone for hours on end anyway

Moomin they were the same with me when I was pushing... they said only to push when I had a contraction, so I did, but whenever my contraction stopped they kept telling me to push. I could barely breathe!

i was having contractions but refused to push lol and i just breathed, good job i did what i wanted as my tears would of been alot worse if i paid attention to her.

she got there when corey was already crowning so she didnt have much time to make me do anything lol
