To continue or not to continue (weaning) - that's the question

My son has recently shows all the signs of being wanted to start solid foods, so last week I introduced him to the weaning process. Today is day 11 and he's suddenly refusing to take the food. I am a traditional weaner. He has been really good since I started and took to the solids well and progressed everyday, but today he's just leaped backwards and refuses outright - he shuts his gums together tight so I don't even have chance.

We had a few problems with his milk too...he was a good drinker but now he starts fighting after he's downed a couple of ounces - the rest becomes a challenge. I have to distract his attention while he drinks.

Is this normal behaviour, and should I just stick to the milk for now and lay off the weaning?

Have I done any damage by starting the weaning a little early?

Do you think the solids problem is related to the milk problem too?

I'm just clueless!

i dont think you will have done any damage hun,

but if i were you id lay off the weaning for a while, esp as milk is more important right now ,

try again when he is closer to 6 months :flower:

I wouldn't give up hun just try different things a little at a time! I have started having this problem with Harry and he's nearly 8 months, sometimes he just refuses food! He took yoghurt off me today but refused his tea from his dad!
I know its easier said than done but try not to stress they are still learning but if you are concerned re milk speak to ur hv! xx

Hiya! Totally agree with Twinkle Star. At the mo, all the nutrition lo needs is in his milk. If you still want to offer solids, then do so, perhaps let him play with wee bits and get his hands dirty, eg, a wee bit of Petit Filous dolloped onto his high chair. As long as you have plenty of wet and dirty nappies and he is gaining weight steadily then he is doing grand. I know it's worrying, but try to relax... this might just be a bad day. Good luck tomorrow xxx :

all it meens is hes just not ready hun. just try again later on he be fine on just the milk for now xx

Sorry, just reread and saw you were worried about milk intake as well. Mairi has never drained any more than a 4oz bottle in one go in her life. If you're concerned, try writing down how much he takes over a few days and see if there's a pattern as to when he takes more/less. You might surprise yourself and he might just take little often. Again, have a look at his weight gain and if you're still concerned, call the HV xxx

My son has 4oz too...occassionally 5. Great advice with keeping a record - will do!

HI hun. We started weaning at wk 20 due to reflux & after 1 wk Omar started to drop his milk intake. He wasnt a big drinker & he wasnt taking more that 10 oz in 24 hrs. So after 4 wks of weaning at around 5 mnths 3 wks we stopped & started again at 6.5 mnths. He was more ready for solids. He still doesnt take much formula but after 6 + they dont need more than 18-21 oz in addition to solids which is easier to fit & top up with dairy than 24-28 oz when they'r younger xx

I think I will try the weaning for a few more days just to rule out whether it is "just a bad day" or not. If he still refuses, I'll leave off the weaning for later. I guess my main concern should be his milk intake which is satisfactory as long as I can keep him entertained lol

i started weaning today dreading it i spoke to hv yesterday as lottie is 21 weeks +2 days and said i can start on solids slowly baby rice only for first couple of weeks well she took a tiny bit was not impressed at all by it:nope: but my lo drains 7-9 0z bottles every 3 hours i think maybe he might just be letting you know he doesnt want it have you tryed letting him hold the spoon and seeing if he will take it his self im so dreading all this good luck hun
