Top up feeds

Hi ladies i've been told to give my LO a top up feed of expressed milk on a night but not sure how much to give him or what times best to give it to him. Do i feed him first on the breast then finish witht he expressed stuff or just give him the expressed stuff?? Sorry to sound thick but i've never given him one before

However much he wants!!! Let him feed from you as long as he will and then have a 5oz bottle ready and just see how much he takes. I would do this the last feed before YOU go to bed.... There are bottles you can buy that have nipples more simliar to the breast.

Hmm prob breast first is better cos if it's late at night he might be getting tired and not suck efficiently if he gets the bottle first......just an idea.

LC advised me to do top ups around lunchtime. Your body is supposed to naturally produce more at night so you can make the most of your supply them by just breastfeeding. Also the bigger feed may keep him going longer so you can take the opportunity to do some expressing (not likely you are gonna get up in middle of night to do it, more chance of doing this in day time!)

I'd just try doing what you fancy first them alter if you like.

I used to top up last thing at night but now I give her a bottle top up after her bath and then she gets it all down. Then I nurse her before bed with seems to relax her more. It's trial and error. Like Ryder said get a nice bottle full to start with and see how he gets on and adjust up or down accordingly. I used to top up with 3oz and now I do 6 and she takes between 4 and 6.

I would top up last so he can help build your supply and you won't need to top up.
