I do like how they didn't sensationalise it, and made it clear that her death was not due to the homebirth itself. What a sad loss for the family :(

Yes such a terrible thing. That article was well written, but unfortunately many will take this as a reason not to homebirth.

I know :( It's a shame really. It definitely wouldn't put me off. I do wonder if this woman had any underlying risks (i.e. heart problems or family history of them), but then I suppose if she did it would have been mentioned not just in the article but to her midwife.

That's a fantastic article & how heartening it is to see such a rise in homebirth numbers in both Australia and apparently the US!

I homebirth in Australia and so do most of my friends. If you turn up to hospital it's unlikely ou will get support for a homebirth, it's not their area so to speak. Let her know that she needs to locate an independent midwife. The IMs I know are really busy - some so busy that they are only finding clients through word of mouth - which obviously makes them very difficult to locate but if she looks around on homebirth forums she will be able to get the names of the IMs in her area. Some birth centers do allow waterbirthing but others only allow you to labour in the pool.

I've read some anti homebirth comments in response to the media reports about this tragic death which is silly since 6-7 mothers die in childbirth each year in Australia and nobody make a fuss about it at all.
