Hello everyone

I am looking for someone with some experience of my issue, I am tearing myself in two deciding what to do.

I have a joint condition which causes severe pain, I am now at the end of the road with the painkillers I am on now as the pain is rendering me incapable of doing anything. My consultant wants me to take Tramadol to see if it has an effect and then I will have something stronger if not - I am determined not to take anything stronger. I am currently 19 weeks pregnant.

I am really worried about the effect of taking Tramadol on my baby as I have been warned that the baby could be born dependent on it. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any stories would be much appreciated.

This is an awful decision to make and I feel very guilty, please do not post any judgemental comments (I have already had 'I would NEVER do that to my baby' etc from family members, but they do not know what it is like).

Thanks!

i so sorry hun i dont know what tramadol would do with regards to your baby . i feel for you havng to make the choice though . i will have to make the same choice if i fall pregnant. xxxxxxxx

They tried me on tramadol at about 32 weeks but it didn't do anything so I only took it for a few days. Being in pain isn't great for baby either so if you can manage the pain while being watched closely then do what you need to do x

Yeah that is a really tough one... I was prescribed Tramadol as well but was really trying to avoid it as much as possible. I ended up taking it once but it did absolutely nothing for me so I never took another. A lot of doctors brought up severe objections to it. My GP, however, told me it was perfectly safe unless I used it regularly. Yeah... It's not an easy choice! I'm sorry. I hope you feel better soon enough, one way or another. :hugs:

I have cared for a few babies of mothers who had taken tramadol regularly throughout pregnancy and its very hard to say the definite outcome. All but one of the baby's showed no symptoms of withdrawing, but the one I did see was quite obviously in pain, distinct cry and having to be held all night, that said however its not to say that the mum wasnt under the influence of different drugs during pregnancy. I'm sorry you have to make this decision I hope you make the right one for your situation xxx
