Trying to conceive on Clomid after m/c

Hi Everyone

I've been on and off these boards for the last couple of months whilst on a rollercoaster, I'm 35 on Sunday and we're actively trying to conceive, however, on 23rd July we lost our baby at approx 5 weeks.

We were waiting for me to get a date to go in for an op to have my tubes checked, but consultant has decided there's no need as "it's quite apparent given I conceived that at least one of my tubes is working" so she has now put me on Clomid.

I'm a little concerned though as I have polycystic ovaries and the leaflet clearly says, take with care if you have PCOS.

Also, she has given me 15 tablets, for three cycles, however, the leaflet clearly says that your ovaries should be checked after ever cycle.

Has anyone else received this approach when trying to conceive.

I'm a tad dis-heartened by the whole experience, out of the whole thing, there's only been 2 nice people I've dealt with, the lady at the fertility clinic the day before we found out we were pregnant and a receptionist at the ward, the rest have been cold and seriously lacking compassion and well, this arrogant consultant I seen on Thursday was so stern, I actually felt like I was in the headmasters office.

Just so want to try for another baby, but at the same time, I'm a tad nervous as the lack of guidance and advice I have received.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I know how it feels to want to start trying again right away. Is there a reason they want to try you on Clomid? Usually it is for people who have irregular cycles or who aren't ovulating. I know PCOS can give you irregular cycles, but not always. It sounds like you might be apprehensive about trying Clomid. Why don't you try naturally for a cycle or two while you do some more research. I have heard that it might interact with PCOS, but I'm not an expert. I think there is another drug, similar to Clomid that works better for people with PCOS.

I have experienced regular docs just prescribing Clomid without investigating your particular issues. I had that happen but I got pregnant right before I was supposed to start Clomid. I'm glad I didn't do it now because I don't think I would have liked the side effects. Is there any way to meet with a specialist or at least someone who has more compassion?

This whole journey can be so difficult. I'm sorry you are going through it.

Thanks for your response Amanda, yes, I have very irregular cycles, so actually falling pregnant naturally was a HUGE surprise. We had just visited gynaecology and were about to start Clomid once my tubes had been checked, then the next day I had a funny turn and did a test and it was positive, we couldn't believe it.

So the long and short of it is yes, we've been trying a couple of years now and with my irregular cycles and blood tests showing I'm not ovulating, that's why we're on Clomid.

The woman I'm talking about the other day was the senior consultant believe it or not!!!

I think I'm going to make an apt for my GP, she's nice and at least I know I can talk to her and ask her questions, etc.

I'm not particularly apprehensive about Clomid to be honest, I'm willing to try anything, it's just with her mannerisms she totally caught me off guard and there's so much I would have like to ask, especially now that in hindsight, there's a lot of contradiction in what we've been told and what the leaflet says!?

I have found this sometimes, doctors aren't as sympathetic/interested in these matters. I was prescribed clomid, but not really offered an hsg to see if my tubes were blocked, well he said I could have one if I really wanted to but he didn't think it was neccesary, unless I did not concieve within 3 months of treatment. So perhaps if you need to (which hopefully you won't) you could ask at your next appointment.
I also have to say I felt my consultation was a bit weird, I was with a consultant and his 'assistant' who I assume was a registrar and it was a bit awkward in places, I didn't get a sympathetic bedside manner feeling from them really, they didn't really seem on my side or to take me very seriously don't know if this is perhaps the response u got, I find different doctors give you completely different treatment. Going to your GP might be worth a try I went to ask some questions about metformin as the consultant prescribed it to me and I didn't feel answered my questions thoroughly

I had a mmc on 13th July and am TTC again on clomid - also have PCOS - I am charting and didnt ovulate the first cycle after mc so thought we'd start the clomid straight away (had been given clomid after my HSG but got bfp before taking it) my fertility clinic dont scan and only offer CD21 bloods for 2 out of the 6 months / cycles of clomid so really I'm going to depend on my charts - we dont have another appointment at our clinic until April 2011

not sure if that helps? each clinic / hospital has such different ways its hard to know whats best - I was also concerned when I heard other ladies were getting routinely scanned but my clinic arent concerned - my consultant is like a very strict headmistress

Lace & Pearls, that's exactly it, it's a sheer lack of information and compassion. Okay, so they hand out these drugs every day, they know what these drugs do, they know what to look out for, but I'm sorry, I don't!! Little advice and guidance would be nice.

On the one hand they tell you the internet can be a bad thing as there's so much conflicting information out there, but on the other hand, the leave you with no resources but the internet with their lack of direction given!!!

My consultant was lovely, I've got to say, but her boss, the doctor, consultant, registrar, whatever you call her, that I seen last week wasn't nice at all, ridiculously stern, not helpful and made me feel like I was wasting her time.

I was also on metformin, then when I got a positive result, the silly doctor at my surgery hummed, and hawed over whether I should keep taking it, looked on the net, looked in a book and then said, oh, I don't really know!!?? In the end she made a call that I should stop taking it!!??

As for lack of compassion, well...

when the hospital thought I was ectopic, the nurse asked me to make go back for an early scan in 7 days time (timing was critical), so I tried to call relevant department after not receiving an apt to be told, we’re too busy, short-staffed and there’s no appointments for 10 days, I explained the situation to be told, “well I can’t magic appointments from no-where”. I tore strips off her and told her did she ever think she was in the wrong job, that a little compassion went a long way when people were worried about the possibility they could be losing their baby!!! Funny how when I called the ward back to tell them this, they managed to get me an apt.!!??


The day I started mis-carrying, I was told by some ignorant cow on the phone, there’s no point me going into the hospital, these things happen and I’ll just have to go with the flow and take paracetamol for the pain and keep my original appointment for the scan to make sure I passed everything. No compassion whatsoever! I said to her, for all she might deal with this kind of stuff everyday, I don’t and a little compassion would go along way….silence….

Grrrrrr….

I've made an apt with a nice doctor at my surgery on Friday. I'm going armed with a list of questions!!!

Oh God that's horrible I'm so sorry you had to deal with people like this

MY OH works for the NHS and he says unfortunately some pople really aren't suited it to it because they have absolutely no people skills, sometimes the consultants are the worst...

Hi, I have pcos and am on clomid, we started around 3 years to to ttc, got pregnant naturally very quickly but this sadly ended at 15 weeks, then I was started on clomid as i stopped to not ov on my own, I got pregnant on clomid but sadly I mc in January this year again, though this time its not doing its magic even though they have upped the dosage!

Getting your tubes checked etc is not std procedure with Clomid, I have never been checked, just told that as I do not ovulate alone, or if so v rarely that clomid will help..

I hope you get your miracle soon.
