Ttc after d&c?

I'm getting way ahead of myself because I'm still waiting for my d&c, which is scheduled for Thursday, and we haven't even fully decided whether we'll try again. But, I've been trying to find some info on the practicalities of ttc after a d&c and I haven't come up with much at all. The information sheet I got from hospital only says that it's safe to ttc even before a first period and there's no increased risk of miscarriage.
But what about the practicalities? How long does it usually take to ovulate? When is it safe to have sex again, so there's no risk of infection?

Anyone else in the same boat?

I can only really share my experience from 2010, when I was told at what should have been 10 weeks that my twin pregnancy was a mmc. I had the d&c just a couple of days later because there was a cancellation and it was the week before christmas so I was keen for everything to be done with before then (iyswim?).

The actual procedure itself was super straightforward, I had very little pain or bleeding afterward but mentally/emotionally I found it hard, because for 6 weeks I had been walking around pregnant, not knowing if things would work out for either one or both of the babies in there, and then went from being told definitely not, to not being pregnant anymore very suddenly, and it all just scrambled my brain a bit (a lot actually).

So we decided to wait until after my first period and then re-evaluate how we were feeling about TTC. I got my first period exactly one calendar month on from the d&c, I seem to recall it being a bit heavier and more painful than normal but nothing horrendous, and from that point on we decided to basically NTNP. I wasn't checking for ovulation but had a vague idea of when it was happening, and we were all ill around that time with a d&v virus  but apparently we must have caught that egg anyway because my next period didn't turn up and I tested straight away and found out I was pregnant. Everything went completely smoothly and straightforward that time and we had a healthy baby boy born at 38+4

I hope that everything goes well with your d&c and your recovery :hugs:

Aw, thanks for your reply Rebaby! Nice to read a happy end story. Not that your journey was easy of course. But even getting cycles back quickly would make me feel better. A tiny bit more in control I guess.

Hey
Me and DH waited for a month after as that's what we were told to do. I didnt ovulate the first two cycles after. But my periods returned back to normal very quickly 😊
Anyway fast forward 9 months and I got another BFP. It took way longer than expected but I think my body needed that time to heal perhaps. Also I found out I had cervicitus which can make conceiving difficult. The month I took my antibiotics to get rid of it was the one it hot pregnant. So either coincidence or the cervicitus was holding us back.
Good luck for Thursday. The procedure actually was ok. Minimal bleeding after. Mainly spotting and very mild cramping like a period. Nothing more :flower:
So Sorry for your loss X

I just had my d&c 2 weeks ago today. They told me to wait a cycle because of dating reasons, however my nurse stated many people end up pregnant right away without any increased risk. As far as the ovulation and period she said everyone is different.

I am almost 6 weeks post d&c and haven't had a period yet, but my cycles have always been irregular lately because my son still bf sporadically. My Dr said no sex for 2 weeks after to avoid infection. She advised waiting one cycle before ttc. Again. I am in the same boat :) hope you are on the road to healing soon

Thanks for your replies!

Trying 4first, congratulations on your new pregnancy! Crossing everything for you for a happy and healthy nine months. How are you feeling? Hope you're not too anxious. My first pregnancy was a mmc but I had two perfectly healthy pregnancies after that. Hopefully it'll be the same for you!

Bee and bcos, sorry you're here as well. Are you both trying now?

DH and I are sure we'll try again but we haven't spoken about timing yet. My d&c isn't until tomorrow, afterwards we'll talk about where we're going from here. For various reasons, I'd like to try straight away. My hospital specifically say that there's no increased risk should I get pregnant straight away. Although I guess with the no sex for two weeks rule, maybe that's unlikely anyway?

In the same boat.....14 days past D&C and had only the faintest of faint lines on HPT yesterday - likely negative today....but I feel like I am approaching ovulation. Have CM which suggests it =- however I thought it was unlikely that I would ovulate this cycle. I am tempted to try today and tomorrow however have the added complication of a possible molar (had one last July detected on tissue after D&C) so awaiting confirmation that it is not before TTC. So tempting though. Might have a sneaky DTD

Mitchnorm, I can see how that'd be difficult. Any idea when you'll have confirmation? And if it was molar, would it change things? I thought it's all the same after a d&c but obviously have no idea. Would there be ongoing treatments?

Yeah after a molar you have to be referred to a specialist hospital for HCG to be monitored back to normal levels - if it fails to drops or rises - chemo may be required. Mine dropped fine last time and I was cleared to TTC after about 10 weeks. Can be a lot longer obviously.

I am waiting for the call.....14 days since D&C - call came after 11 days last time. I called yesterday and just about to harass again:wacko:

I hope you get that call soon and it's an all clear. The wait must be horrendous. :-(

My own wait is nearly over. D&c tomorrow afternoon and so far I have no bleeding yet so hopefully I'll make it until then. Can't wait to come home afterwards and start to look forward again. It's been a very, very long week.

Thank you! I just hope it won't be too much waiting. I hate having nothing to occupy my mind. Morning's busy thankfully and then we need to leave for the hospital in 3 hours. Hoping I'll have one of the earlier surgery slots.

Thank you Amy. As you can probably imagine I have days where I feel super positive and days where I feel mega anxious. I just don't know how to feel sometimes. I have an early scan at 8+2 next week and I am very nervous if I'm honest. Just want it over with. Praying that we see a heartbeat. We have wanted this for so long. I don't know how I would cope if it happened again. I think two losses is plenty. Need some good luck now.
I love hearing of people's success stories. So lovely that you had two healthy pregnancies after your MMC. It goes to show that good things can happen :flower:

I hope that your procedure went well and that your are not feeling too uncomfortable this evening :hugs:

Well, that was a looooooong day. But all went well as far as I know and I'm not in pain now, other than from the various needle sites and a sore jaw, presumably from the anaesthetic. I'm counting this as Day 0. Let normality ensue!

Trying4first, when is your scan? Everything crossed for you!

Bleeding has stopped already. I'm hoping that's a positive sign. I've made a group thread for people starting ttc their rainbows around now, please come and join me if you like: https://babyandbump.momtastic.com/t...s-2016-come-keep-me-company.html#post36780822

Glad it went OK. My bleeding stopped pretty quickly. I took that as a good sign.

Btw if anyone was interested I got the call and it wasn't another molar. I have to do a quick hcg follow up (routine) but also got a negative hpt yesterday which means body is getting back to normal. I have decided on skip this cycle ttc....get back on track. .get hcg test done..wait for AF and crack on next month x x

That's great news. Fresh start for you from now.

Missing this cycle. ..waiting for AF to hit then ttc again fingers crossed for us both x

Sorry Amy it's taken me ages to reply.
Sadly the scan didn't go well and II am miscarrying for a third time. I am going to EPU on Tuesday to be booked in for a D&C. Hopefully the wait isn't too long
