My little girl came on the 10th and from the start has a great latch. My milk just came in on Sunday woohoo!!

I think we are doing well but I have two questions for you all.

First, how do you get the wiggly little baby arms out of the way? I was told to place the one under my breast. So that leaves one, but she is always trying to stuff it in her mouth as I bring her in to latch. We use the football hold.

Second, she is starting to get what looks like a red rash (irritation) under her bottom lip. Could this be from where her chin is up against my breast (large boobies) How do clear this up and what to do to prevent it?

I have a home care nurse coming today for our first check but I thought I would pick the brains here as well.

First i'd use a blanket and wrap her up (swaddle her) thats what i had to do also cos Tabs was such a fighter  Means they feel secure and you can keep their little hands our the way.. (i'd like to swaddle her now cos she likes to nip and hit now :dohh: )

You could use some Vaseline on her lip the make a barrier, i also always find that sudocrem solves everything  But i would ask my HV anyway about that in case they can give you any special cream.

Sounds like you are doing amazingly well congratulations :)

Congrats and well done on getting this far!! :D

I'd say the same as Sarah - swaddle he or just tuck a muslin square around her when feeding. You'll feel all fingers and thumbs at first but you'll soon get used to it.

Newborns do seem to get rashy in the first few weeks. Personally I wouldnt put anything on such delicate skin unless it's getting reeeeally bad and then I'd just use some Vaseline or sudocrem like Sarah said. Just keep her face nice and dry and it will go soon enough.

:D

I would tuck the bottom arm under mine and then using the arm that was cradling my son, I would hold that top are down till I got him latched on.

The HV told me to expect a little rash or some little spots as it where their skin gets damp from milk... she said just to keep it dry and not put anything on it at all... a couple of weeks on and its nearly gone. :baby:

..and as for flapping, i pinned one arm in the rugbygrip and just moved the other one out the way with my free hand until he was latched on... the silly boy still gets over excited and trys stuffing his hand in his mouth now! :dohh:

Thanks everyone! I can't seem to swaddle her tight enough, she just gets those arms out so fast! I will keep tucking the one arm, and I will try to get that upper arm in my fingers to keep it out the way.

It is so funny though, it frustrates her, but she does get so frantic and the hands are everywhere!!

Good to know about the rash. I figured it was the milk, I am happy to hear it will clear eventually!

I have to admit I am pretty proud of myself. Even though it is mostly her. Right away she found the boob so easily and latched almost with out me doing anything! We did supplement for a day cause my milk didn't come right away and she lost 10% of her birthweight and was so angry. We did it with a syringe (we couldnt get the cupping) but now I make my own! Wooohoooo boobie juice!
