UK Ladies - Early Scans?

Hi Ladies,

I don't know where I fit anymore. I've had lots of losses and was being tested for reasons why etc when we suddenly found out I was pregnant again. That pregnancy by some miracle grew to become my rainbow baby girl, who's now 1 years old.

Since I fell pregnant with DD I've moved house so in a different county now. We very unexpectedly found out I'm pregnant again a few weeks ago. I went to the doctors to 'register' it and was told I wouldn't be offered any early scans or any additional support, just the normal scans and midwife appointments. Whilst I was by no means expecting the level of care I had in my previous pregnancy (weekly scans from 5 weeks to 13 weeks - excessive I know but my consultant insisted even when I disagreed, they were trying to decipher the cause of the miscarriages at the same time) I still had an expectation I'd be offered an early scan.

Am I wrong to think I'd be given 1 early scan? Does my healthy child now wipe out all my previous losses? (I've had 7 losses and lost 8 babies). Do I now need to have a further 3 losses before I can get any support??

Thanks in advance to all those that reply, honest opinions much appreciated, I'm a big girl I can take it!!:flower: xxx

I'm not in the UK (I live in the US), so I realize my answer is somewhat not applicable, but I thought I'd weigh in anyway. I had one early loss, followed by my daughter. I had a couple of extra scans with my daughter. With this pregnancy, my doctor's office didn't offer an earlier scan, but when I requested one, they were more than happy to do it. I don't know how it works in the UK, but I would definitely ask or see if there are other options (perhaps private doctors?) to get an early scan. Given your history, I can't imagine someone won't be more than willing to do that for you. Congrats and best of luck for another H&H 9 months!! :hugs:

Topanga053 - Thank you so much for your reply. You're right, I feel like I was being a bit thick! I will ask the Early Pregnancy Unit directly for an early scan and see what the response is, so try and self refer. If that's still a no go, I'll go and see a different doctor to see if I can get sent that way. I don't want more than 1 reassurance scan as will have my normal 12 week scan anyway. I have no symptoms at all, which isn't that abnormal for me but I guess it's still a slight worry.

Good luck with your pregnancy, almost halfway now!! xx

you can ask your GP to refer you to an early pregnancy unit or just self-refer considering your history. They will most definitely do at least one scan at an EPU and if all is well they will probably discharge you, if not they will ask you to come again in a week or two for another scan.

Unfortunately I think this is the norm- they don't seem to realise how important the reassurance is. Have a chat with your midwife, she may get you in for one x
