I ate some of this last night. Now I'm worried that I might have contracted toxoplasmosis. I've just read that there's a significant association.

Has anybody else been in a similar position and if so what did you do?

Many thanks x

There are so many things that can cause toxoplasmosis. If you ate at a reputable place and it was hot then I'm sure you'll be fine. I just wouldn't make a habit of it. Keep an eye out for fluey symptoms. I would think it's very very unlikely (I've even been known to have the odd slice of v good quality fresh parma ham on a weak day lol)

Just think of all the women who go into labour not even knowing they are pg and their bubbas are fine! x

why did you eat it undercooked?.. during pregnancy, you need to make sure ALL meat is cooked thoroughly.

Well done venison would be a crime (not to mention taste terrible!)
I dont eat well done meat as it ruins the flavour. In moderation I personally dont think its a problem. x

I guess if they're serving it in a restaurant, it's not the same as going out and shooting it yourself.. that's what we do here in the NW part of the US. It has always been flavorful, and I always cook my meat all the way through.. it tastes great to me?

I'm just saying, if you're gonna eat it while pregnant.. cook it all the way through.

Everyones tastebuds different I guess. Personally think that well done red meat is terrible no matter how nice the cut is which Im presuming is why some chefs wont cook it anything but rare if you go to a nice restaurant. IMO It takes away loads of the flavour but thats only me and my preferences. I wasnt having a go!

Im still eating it medium/rare providing its fully seared. I think some of the pregnancy food guidelines are completely over the top but again thats me and would certainly not impose my choices to eat various things onto anyone else. x

What if you got salmonella or something? That's the point.. fully cooking prevents bacteria and parasites.. I've had salmonella before, and I could not keep anything down for 2 weeks and lost almost 20 pounds - I can't imagine what they would be like while pregnant.. and I agree, "by-the-book" is quite ridiculous.. but if the deer are wild, they are at risk for a lot of parasites.

Sorry hun but what is venison??

sorry lol

It's deer meat. :winkwink:

delicious delicious deer meat

My mom makes the best deer jerky on earth, and I'm craving it so bad right now. She won't make it for me though because the doctor said jerky and wild game are both a no-no.

Why is wild game a no-no? I've never heard that and I just had some venison steaks last night. I hate all these food rules!

I think you are fine. My husband and his family have lived off of deer meat their entire life. The entire family are avid hunters. No one has ever gotten sick off of deer meat. Deer are much cleaner than cows because the bacteria is stored in fat!!!! Deer have very little fat!! Much healthier and safer than beef or pork!

Ah, venison! My DH and I are avid hunters, harvesting off the farm only what we would eat. Venison to me, appears healthier (free range, all natural and NO hormones!) but sadly, if you do overcook it, you're better off eating a football... I would try to cook it as DONE AS possible (I have some terrific marinade tricks!)

Wild game can be known to carry infection and parasites...

Just a few tid-bits of knowledge....store bought meat is 10 times more likely to have parasites please see "Food Inc" documentary..YUCK! Venison is amazing, we hunt as well and eat our deer frequently deer roast is my FAVORITE...simmer in a crockpot for 20 hours mmmmmm...anywho, while all animals and foods can carry these bacteria cooking doesnt necessarally rid it of these contaminants...and for the record years back no one cooked their meat all the way and they ate and did whatever they wanted and babies made it :) do what you feel is good for you! :)
