Undescended testicules and surgical sperm retrieval

My BF has no sperm at all in his semen..because of undescended testicules when he was born.
We have heard that it is possible to have SURGICAL SPERM RETRIEVAL , treatement called PESA or TESA.
Anyone been thru this and what was the outcome or with similar prob?????
Any advice plz.................
