Hiya, just thought I'd ask as havent seen much online about this so wondered if any mothers have experienced this and what happened....

Went for my four weekly weigh in with DD and the Health visitor begin stretching her legs out. I had thought about three weeks ago that my DD left leg seemed shorter than her right but I put this down to the nappy being on and didnt tell anyone my concerns.

When I saw the HV doing this I immediately said do you think she has unequal leg lengths and she said yes.... I now have a GP appointment on Monday as the HV wouldnt manipulate the hip to see if there was a problem, only GP should do this she said.

DD is 6mths exactly and progressing well with everything.

Anyone any experiences of this and what happened?? :sad1:

No experience but just wanted to say good luck with your appt :hugs:

I could have written this myself!!!

My son is 6 months old and I noticed at 4 month, that he had uneven skin creases.... Fast forward a couple of months and I noticed his left leg seemed shorter than the right.

Went to gp who agreed with me.... Tried to dothe hip clicky test thingy... And referred lo to specialist orthopaedic paediatric. My appointment wasn't for months, but luckily we have private cover so went the next day.

Specialist literally spent 5 mins checking lo, did an x-ray and said everything is fine and normal!!!!

She said people are assymetrical anyway and it was negligible and wouldn't cause a problem... There was no hip dysplasia either...

Oops lo crying any more info needed, just ask!!! But don't worry! :flower:

aw Poppeteer thank you so much for replying - I couldn't find anything online and was worried.

She doesnt have uneven creases thats the weird thing, its just when you stretch them out it slightly appears shorter but the creases line up - weird even HV said that.
To complicate she has hyper mobile joints which comes from my other half - he can bend his knees and ankles at awful angles so thats his fault lol I hope that her ankle flexibility is just distorting the appearance.

I've stopped her in her jumperoo which she loves so she keeps reaching for it until I know if its made it worse :-(

the Doc we see tomorrow is very through - just out of uni so I know if I ask for a hospital scan he'll give it. I would love the piece of mind I guess.

Fingers crossed.

I hada similar experience to popeteer, and everything turned out to be fine. Now his legs are perfectly even now he's fully mobile. I had mild hipdysplasia as a child and have had pelvic problems with my eldest so I was worried on that score. Hope your LO is fine I am sure I heard that one of Beckham's legs is longer than the other- and look at him! Xx

My sister has uneven leg lengths. Its only slight but you would never know by looking at her. When she was younger she wore an insole in one of her shoes, but now she doesnt bother. She doesnt walk funny or anything. In fact in her single days she had guys lining up to date her.

Apparently my dh says he has uneven leg lengths too. I didnt even know. He used to be a tennis coach, so obviously didnt impair him in any way either.

Hope everything goes all right at the doctors!

Hi, there's two types. True length discrepancy which my daughter has of 3cm where the hips are aligned but her lower leg is shorter or the other type where the hips aren't aligned. This is where the hip is out of socket or the socket is immature, my daughter also had this but it was corrected by her wearing two nappies for a few months to hold her legs apart.

She has a small insole in her shoe but will eventually have surgery to lengthen her leg.

It's very rare though so I'm sure your lo will be fine but if you want any further info feel free to ask xx

Just to update, GP has referred us to ortho specialist to review the hypermobility as he think this is causing the appearance of unequal leg lengths.

He doesnt seem to think that the legs are any different when you fully stretch them out and the hip test he repeated from her 6weeks check revealed no issues what so ever

Appointment is june 18 so will update incase anyone else ever has this issue in future,

Thank you all for commenting x

I havent read the whole thread and i do not mean to panic you

My mum noticed when my broter was younger he had one leg a little shorter than the other- it was eventually conclude after a brain scan he had very mild cerebal palsay due to a brain injury at birth

It is nothing to worry about, and of course it might be nothing! But i can only advise from experience.

He lives a totally normal life and always has done. He can walk look after himself etc. the only difference was he took a bit longer to grasp things at school (including social skills etc) and he had to wear a leg splint but other than that- it wasnt a big deal

Hope everything is OK!!

My daughter had one leg longer than the other, uneven creases, couldn't bare weight on her legs, torticollis and low muscle tone. They thought she had hip dysplasia. Sonogram seemed to confirm this however xray said everything was fine. After one more xray to make sure the conclusion was that everything was fine. Right now she is a healthy happy 3 year old with no issues at all.
