So my friend gave me a big bag of used baby clothes from her baby and I was looking through them and some of them are stained with spit up. I am thankful for the baby clothes but the spit up stains gross me out. Would you use these? Anyone have any suggestions for getting the stains out?

I got tons of used clothes as well with my son. I didn't use the worn out stained ones. It's not worth my baby looking like a slob.

I would probably wash them and if they still looked gross, I would just not use them.

Use vanish then just wash as normal. If it hasnt come out then just dont use it. x

I would wash them on extra hot cycle, and check them out after. Like the previous posters said, I probably wouldn't use them if the stains don't come out. That said, it's nice to have a couple of "gross" outfits in case baby has a case of diarrhea or something. They're known to go through 5 or 6 outfits a day, and having a couple stained ones on hand might be nice!

Try using Borax..we have it in GA so you may be able to find it. Also, try washing in dish washing detergent (the powder kind). If not, keep them for when baby is sick or has diarrhea like Wamommy suggested!

Can't add any advice on the stains, but wanted to add with used baby clothes that it is important to check any poppers for signs of damage.

To my eternal regret, I didn't do this with DS after I was given some clothes by a friend and a popper had split into two, leaving a sharp edge which scratched his leg when he was only a few days old. I was absolutely mortified, and even though he was fine after initially crying, I still feel stupid and guilty to this day for not checking them.

I would throw the stained ones out. It's impossible to get formula stains out of clothes.
I am how ever using a few things I had boxed up from DS but none are stained!

Agree with what others have said and wash see if it comes out, if not then dump.

I was just going through some of DS's old clothes today, even though I' team yellow thought i'd get some stuff ready in case it is another boy and I noticed a lot of his stuff is stained too, I think with age it discolours....oh well I just have a great excue to go shopping when baby is here, boy or girl! lol x

Thank Ladies! I was feeling bad about getting rid of the stained ones but honestly I just don't want my baby to wear stuff that is stained. I am trying a stain stick on the ones I think are worth saving though to see if that works.

I was given a load of baby clothes, i got rid of the stained ones. :)

lemme ask you this: when you have your baby and buy him/her clothes and they get a little spit up on them..are you going to throw them out? probably not. why not just use the ones for when you know baby is going to get dirty soon! and the terribly dirty ones can be used for cleaning rags! my dad STILL uses my brother and I's cloth diapers as dusting rags. I'm 24 and my brother is 25

If the stains don't come out, use the clothes to clean your windows :D

Update: The stain stick did not remove the breast milk spit up. Too bad cause there were a couple of really cute body suits.

The clothes we have for LO is about 50% new and 50% used I bought at the salvation army and the goodwill. Im picky about the used stuff I buy for my kids. I buy my daughter used clothes when i find cute ones, so hers are about 50% new and 50% used. My son however, is harder to find him good quality used clothes (hes almost 9) as at that age, they seem to really wear them out. LOL. So, his are pretty much 100% new, but I did save all of the good stuff for LO (but only started saving at 3-4T and we're up to size 10 now.

If it has no stains or rips and is in good condition, I'll use it. If it has stains however, I wont. Even when my kids stain their clothes, they go in the bin of outside play clothes and not everyday clothes. So if it were me, i wouldnt use the stained up ones, but thats just me. I sell a lot of used clothes online, and i wont sell anything that has rips or stains because I know I wouldnt want my kids wearing them. Those clothes usually get donated to the goodwill or salvation army.

I have decided not to use anything that I've been given that is worn out and/or stained and likewise anything I give away is in good condition too.

Its true your new baby will make his/her own stains in a short time but to me it seems somehow different that the stains will be from my breast milk rather than someone else's. Perhaps its just me but I'd rather my baby's things look perfect the first time they're worn at least.

As others have said don't let them go to waste. Sleepsuits and vests make great cloths for household chores and when you have LO's there's always lots of cleaning to do

I discovered a used baby clothes store here (Once Upon a Child) but thankfully they don't sell anything stained. SO CHEAP! I'd toss the yucky clothes that won't come clean and try a used store for replacements. I have a ton of new outfits from our shower but needed some basics in 3 month size, I got onesies ten for $10, most of their stuff is brand new looking. I checked carefully for signs of wear and tear anyway. We ended up with some spendy brand stuff, for almost nothing. SUPERLIKE!!!

Yeah, I'm funky about having another baby's spit-up on the clothes MY kid is going to wear. It's just one of those peevy things, you know? I'd probably keep a couple of icky outfits for sick/pukey/poopy times, and toss the rest.
