Hi, I'm new on here and was just wondering if anyone knows what happens at a VBAC clinic, I have an appointment tomorrow. My first pregnancy resulted in a planned section as my daughter was transverse. I would like to elect to have another section this time, but I got the impression from the midwife that they won't let me elect a section unless there were medical reasons. Anyone have any info?

Are you in the UK or US? Not sure but I think in the UK once you have 1 C -Section they normally suggest another but because you had one due to the position of the baby and not because of something like not dilating etc I'm not sure it works the same.

It's now generally accepted, in the UK, that a vaginal birth after 1 section is much safer and cost effective than another section. You could prob get a repeat section if you really pushed for it, but they may be reluctant.

Hun if you look in the vbac support/info thread link in my siggy there is lots of info....but I have aimed it mostly at those wanting to VBAC.

If you are in the uk it will depend on your area - some hospitals/areas/MW/OB will allow you a ELCS no Q's asked other will say no unless there is medical need as they are more risky for you and baby and obviously more expensive for the hospital.

Why is it you would prefer to have the surgery this time around if you don't have to by the way?

all you can do is ask. just remember the recovery from a second section is likely to be much harder than the first and much harder than a vaginal birth.

they will try and push you for a c-section, but if it is anything like my hospital (west yorkshire) the ultimate decision lies with you, and i have elected another c-section mainly due to how traumatic things were the first time. you have to push for it x

Untrue.

Not all places will, the emphasis where I am is very much on VBAC and I have spoken to a number of women who have felt pushed to VBAC by their MW.

It does really lie with you though.

A CS has higher risks than VBAC, but if you have complications in your pregnancy or other factors such as mental health issues arising from the previous labour and EMCS etc then it may be better to CS.

I had a EMCS with DD and would hate to have another one, there is nothing I would love more then to have a VBAC with my current pregnancy, but chances are slim I am pushing for a VBAC though.

I don't really agree with elective c-sections, but each to their own really.

I hope either way you have the safer option for yourself and baby xx

The stats say that your chance of a successful VBAC is about the same as a first time mum having a successful vaginal birth, so I think with that in mind they encourage you to at least try. Allowing your body to go into labour shows that your LO is ready to be born, and a repeat c-section carries a higher risk of hysterectomy and complications. If/when I get pregnant again, I'll be pushing for a VBAC unless there are medical reasons against :)

^^^ depending on the circumstance of the previous labour and the current pregnancy often the chances of success ar higher.

If you have an uncomplicated pregnancy 2nd time and when you had your first you dilated and especially if you did get to push some then you stand an higher chance than a 1st timer.

I had an emergency c section with my first LO ten years ago due to fetal distress as the cord was round her neck twice, 5 years later I was offered another c section, but chose to try vbac, my labour was 1hour 50min no tears and only gas and air and was home 6 hours later. With this pregnancy I was not given an option, but if I was I would definatly go with the vbac as recovery is so much quicker, but I suppose it does depend on the circumstances of the c section

hi, just to say i have just had my second c-section and it was a great experience, recovery was so much easier than the first time around, much calmer birth, and much happier mummy and daddy at the end of it. i am sure a vbac would give u that positive experience too, but just thought id share my experience x
