Very late birth story (induced with Pitocin, no epi)

Background: I had an easy breezy pregnancy, but had to be induced at 39+5 because I have a bleeding disorder and would need to be given some intravenous blood product before having the baby.

I was admitted to the hospital the night before my scheduled induction, on 29th June and told that I was 0cm dilated, not effaced at all and the baby wasn't engaged. They placed a foley catheter overnight (the little balloon) and told me I might have mild cramping, but nothing happened at all! I watched 2 football matches with DH, ate sandwiches, listened to my meditation mp3s and tried to get some sleep. In the morning the midwife checked me and told me I had made no progress and they decided to start Pitocin before noon. I was really disappointed!

At 11am, I was taken to the labor room, hooked up to an IV of Pitocin and a fetal monitor was strapped to my belly. I started having contractions immediately, about 2 minutes apart, but they weren't much worse than bad period cramps at first. I was texting my mom and sister updates and joking with DH between contractions. By 11.30am I was squeezing DH's hand and sort of groaning through contractions, but I kept trying to focus on the baby coming down smoothly and gently. At around 11.45am the doctor came in to break my water and told me I was 5cm-I had progressed from 0-5 in about half an hour! That was encouraging, but as soon as my water broke (which was NOT a fun procedure), the contractions almost doubled in intensity. They were lasting longer than a minute each and were maybe 20 seconds apart. Every now and then I'd have a double or triple contraction-one after the other, with no break. By 1pm, I was making a whole lot of noise. I didn't mean to, I just couldn't help it! I apologized to the nurse when I caught my breath and she was wonderfully kind and said there was no need to be sorry! All the pain seemed to be concentrated in my lower belly and thighs and the worst part was not being able to move because of all the monitors. Around 1.30, my husband begged the midwife to check me and she said oh it's only her first time, we'll come check in the evening and the thought made me want to die. My husband insisted and went out to find someone who would check me. He came back with a doctor who checked and I saw her face change as she said "you're complete!"

At this point, I was feeling quite triumphant because I thought I can definitely finish the job quickly now and I had the urge to push. The nurses however, told me to STOP pushing as I hadn't received enough blood yet. After that I was fighting the pain, thinking it's like the Cruciatus Curse from Harry Potter, screaming whenever a big contraction hit while they fussed around me doing loads of paperwork and hooking me up to bags of blood. I secretly gave a little push whenever I felt like it because I couldn't really help myself at this point. People had described it as having the urge to poo, but honestly it felt more like being incredibly constipated. Around 3pm, I think I passed out. I was exhausted from the nonstop contractions and no food or water (stupid hospital policy for inductions!) and someone revived me with a puff of Ventolin. I was vaguely aware of a lovely midwife massaging my legs, mopping my forehead and tying up my hair. My husband looked absolutely petrified and although he was holding my hand, I was too zonked by this point to care who was in the room. My own doctor arrived around 3.15pm and she was incredibly encouraging and scolded the nurses for telling me not to push. I was totally in my own zone now, focusing on nothing but getting this baby out safely and gently. The nurses were breaking down the bed, putting my feet up and preparing the little baby warmer and I vaguely registered this without getting too excited as I was sure this would take forever! I heard the doctor say "crowning" and then everyone started yelling at me to push, when the contractions just...stopped. The doctor told me just push when you feel like it. After a few minutes of this the fetal monitor beeped oddly and she said okay sweetie you need to do this in the next push, okay? After that I sort of went into my own head-I remember the sound of myself giving an almighty bloodcurling scream and the horrendous ring of fire and looking up to see my squirming, purpley baby being pulled out! For some reason, I started laughing hysterically. I was just so incredibly relieved! I kept saying "I have a son, we have a son, we did it!" and DH was crying and kissing me. I had a 4th degree tear and needed dozens of stitches because my third stage had lasted about 2 hours, but I actually didn't know any of this because I was holding and feeding my baby while they sewed me up. After a 45 minute first breastfeed, and the best cup of tea of my life, I showered and brushed my hair and found all our friends, all our family members and my grandparents waiting to welcome me and baby to our room :cloud9:

I was on an endorphin high for a couple of days for doing it without any pain relief. HOWEVER, for our next baby I will take ALL THE DRUGS :haha:
