"Vitamin A in high doses is known to lead to birth defects, which is why you are quite rightly concerned about taking any supplements. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin A for adults is 800 micrograms, and no risk of birth defects has been found with less than 4 times the RDA.
I think it would be sensible to ensure that anything you are taking does not amount to more than this or, if you are in any doubt, to avoid it altogether.
The trouble is that the baby's most sensitive time of organ development is before you even know you are pregnant, so stopping supplements when you have a positive pregnancy test will not be adequate.
