of her chocking. what can i give her? im actually petrified and blame myself for the fact that my son is so fussy because of my anxieties x

can someone actually show me how big they cut things up for their los too? x

I was worried about ds choking. I looked up what to do in such am event and stuck posters up around the house!
It's important to learn the difference in choking and gagging.
The first few times we did blw, I was with a friend who had just started weaning and dh. This helped me gain the confidence to trusts lo's own abilities and to feed lo alone.
We started on breadsticks, rice crackers and cucumber sticks x

We cut up food twice the length of ds fist. This allowed him to hold half the food in his fist and attack the other half sticking up out of his fist!

thanks for that, thats good advice. im just beyond scared, i really want to give her stuff but being by myself during the day, im frightened. shes having a nap at the mo and will want lunch when she wakes up- shall i make her some toast or cheese on toast or stick to my pureed lunches? HELP!! xx

The longer you leave it the more likely she is to choke. The gag spot is futher forward in the mouth than an adults to prevent choking but moves back as they get older so the longer you leave it the worse it would be.

oh really? i didnt know this. thanks for that xx

Also learn the difference between gaging and choking, gagging is totaly normal but if you dont know the difference can be scary. Gagging is noisy, you will see them retching but interfering can lead to chocking. Choking is silent and the first thing you might notice is baby turning blue.

Ring your local sure start and see if they run any first aid courses to help settle your fears.

I agree with PP about size to cut things to. The things i found least worrying were some of the organix finger foods - carrot puffs and sweetcorn rings. I found these really helpful as if your LO is anything like mine they won't actually eat much of the finger foods I gave but these kind of melt/dissolve a bit in the mouth so even if he bites off a big bit it sticks to his tongue and shrinks a bit. Don't get me wrong they're really not the be all and end all of finger foods but I've found them helpful for him to learn how to deal with finger foods and me not to panic too much...

yeah actually i remember buying them for my ds for snacks if we were out and he used to love them, there were quite nice as a little snack. i might buy some of those. i actually gave her some toast, cubes of cheese and a breadstick today and she loved sucking on them so hopefully success!!

They use their tongues to mosh the food against the roof of their mouths, so long as its soft enough to fall apart they should be fine. You could try it on yourself first, if its easy to mosh it in your mouth without using your teeth, its fine for LO.

My LO gags when something is too big for her to swallow and it very good at bringing it to the front of her mouth and spitting it out if she doesnt want it. Few scary moments but you can judge at the time if its true choking or just gagging on it and trying to reject it from the back of their mouths. Their gums are also very tough at chewing foods, i gave some penne pasta yesterday with melted cheese mixed with cottage cheese and she was fine with it. She held the penne in her hand and used her 2 bottom teeth to bite bits off. Yes i was watching her like a hawk and wondering if i'd done the right thing giving it but it all went really well.

When you put things down on the tray infront of them for BLW, most of it gets squished in their hands and thrown on the floor anyway though!

Yeah I did notice that she literally had a few little scrappy bits left after it had been mashed up, plus we lost a few bits on the floor too lol xx
