Want to go back part time!

Hi all
I'm due back to my job (as a nurse) in October/November. When I originally went on Mat Leave, I thought I'd go back full time, no problems.... now I'm getting closer to the end of my leave, I really don't think I could face being away from my LO as much, never mind afford the childcare to go with it. Has anyone made the transition from full to part time whilst on leave, and if so, how supportive were the workplace? I'm so scared that I write to them and request PT hours and they turn me down. I couldn't face it.

Hey, i went to see my HR department 3 months before i was due to go back and i asked for flexible working hours .. i was convinced that it would be a problem and they would just say no .. but it wasnt like that at all. They said it was fine to go pt they would just employ someone else to fill the other shifts.

What did work in my favor though is that i asked for weekend shifts (which is the busiest period at my hotel) they said had i asked for say monday/tuesday that wouldnt be fair on other staff or meet needs of the business.

But yeah i was so scared but it all worked out fine at the end of the day most employers will expect ladies returning from mat leave to go pt.

they are legally obliged to consider 'any reasonable request' for part time work under employment law
If you are an NHS nurse, I can't see it being a problem.
I'd discuss with HR and your line manager sooner rather than later

im in the same boat. i go back in sept and apparently can go back on 30 hrs until dec (1 year leave entitlement) then have to apply for flexable hours, my senior sister has been very cagey about reasuring me i ll be able to get this.

i really dont want to work full time.
