They just had Mr Reeves who owns Reeves Corner (big shop that's in the process of being destroyed by fire) in Croydon talking on TV. He said its been in the family for five generations :( Poor guy, its just so wrong. Nothing to do with him whatsoever.

The army are busy sorting out other peoples' countries!!

Yep and most of them have been made redundant by the tories .. bet they're wishing they hadn't now.

and most army personnel earn less than half of what the police earn, 25% are looking at redundancy and they have a much harder life than the police so I say let the police deal with it. They just need to get on and actually deal with it. Then the government need to sort these people out with tougher sentences and less benefits, this isn't about a shooting now it's just criminals stealing in a large scale.

Hackne is not a nice place right now sorry spelling iS
shit on my phone

Argggghhhh, to all these scumbags, stop trashing our capital!!! It makes me so mad to see everything thats happening. I hate the way the media, in particular the BBC are reporting it. No these opportunist scum are not "protesters" and I'll willing to bet there is not deep and meaningful social or political agenda behind their action. Yes a small minority may have originally been protesters, but not the looters. I don't care if you're black, white, young, old, male, female. If you're destroying lives, you're an asshole.

I really feel for the police and on this occassion the government too, if they go in too hard, they'll get called racist. If they are too soft, millions of pounds worth of damage will continue to happen. They can't win.

I'm a liberal, but we have to do what's right now. Stop being so PC and put an end to this now. I would support non lethal methods of controlling the mob; water cannons etc.

Don't let London burn x x

Just to add, not only is this bad for London, it's bad for Britian. It makes me so mad to think only recently was it announced we were starting to reduce our nation's deficit, moving into economic growth (although small, we were growing), tourism doing well, private sector employment was up and the 2012 sites were more or less on schedule.

And now homes and businesses burnt down. Some people have lost everything and for every big shop or supermarket burnt to ground, that's what 50-100 jobs gone overnight. And tourism? Well who would want to come here on holiday at the moment. And what rubbish PR for the Olympics. Not to mention the risk to innocent lives with all the fires, it doesn't bear thinking about. :(

I'm alternating between sadness and anger right now. Just stay safe people x x

i still cant sleep im in such an ammount of shock. To see my old area on the news being demolished is just heartbreaking. I have to go to clapham and croydon tomorrow to pick up my little brother and i shall be straight in and straight back out again, its just not safe there at all! Innocent people are paying the price for these barbaric acts, its disgusting.

Can't sleep tonight, watching the BBC 24/7 news. Stay safe everyone x x

KayteeB - I think we typed that at the same time! I'm up too, trying to not to cry. It's completely heart breaking. x x

so hearbreaking to see the area just being destroyed like that. ive got so many family and friends in those areas who are getting caught up in it all and its just so worrying :(

Can't believe how much its escalated & spreading. Hope my family & friends are all ok. It's just so scary & heart breaking. Hope any ladies who go into labour tonight make it to hospital ok.

My heart goes out to the affected areas.

It's pathetic how much this has got out of hand. Guarantee half of the rioters have no moral reason [figure of speech] to be doing this, or even have a clue why it's happening.

The police aren't really doing much to save the place - standing there with a shield expecting it to make things OK, yet wonder why people feel insecure. I say bring in the forces to sort this out, they'll soon be running back home to their mums.

If anything the whole of Britain isn't making matters easier - government cuts are going to be spent on insurance just to bail out other in-debt companies when everyone is finished.

there are enough jobs - the problem is people without any GCSEs or experience cant get work that pays the same amount as housing benefit/job seekers/safe home grants and various other things.

my mum works in the social care side of things and she knows familes that have never worked, but they get £300 a month for their rent, dont pay any council tax, nion £50 a week for jobseekers.

i dont earn that amount of money and ive worked nearly everyday since i was 16 (albeit part time as ive been studying too) but where is the insentive to work when you get all that - and more for free!?

I just love how as soon as there's any kind of riot or anything going on, there's always at least one person who blames the people on benefits! Stereotypical much!

Sadly I think htaylor has a very valid point. The majority of the youths who are causing this trouble across the country are the new generation of benefit thugs who have not worked a day in their lives (and probably never will) and believe that they have the right to do whatever they like - which includes mindless violence, damage and theft. These people are destroying the livelihoods of hardworking business people and local communities.

As I'm sure everyone will agree there are many many people who are on benefits who will be just as disgusted at this situation as everyone else - but that does not change the fact that the people doing this are not upstanding citizens of the community who work hard to put a roof over their heads or food on the table. Everyone involved should be thoroughly ashamed of what they are doing to our country.

Not to get involved with the whole benefit debate but I know around my way at least it's kids who aren't even old enough to claim benefits.
