I don't know how I have got this far through pregnancy without realising this, but all parmesan cheese is made with UNPASTEURISED milk!

Just noticed last night as I was about to put the usual heap of the stuff on my pasta. I've always assumed that all 'hard' cheeses were ok, but clearly this is an exception to the rule.

I checked all the different brands at the supermarket today (including that 'long-life' powdery parmesan you get in the tubs on the shelf) and all of it is made with unpasteurised milk.

Just thought I would pass this one in case it's not just me.....!

Nearly bought some today aswell, think that I will get the vegan stuff - does not taste quite the same, but better than none!

Just to let you know that you can eat parmesan as it's too hard a cheese for listeria to grow despite being made with unpasteurised milk. It's only soft cheeses you need to avoid.

Yeah, I saw that when I googled about it before I posted, but the Asda cheese that I had carries a specific warning in tiny print that it is not suitable for pregnant women. I don't know which is correct but it hasn't done me any harm so far so perhaps it is fine!

The government advice is that parmesan is OK. I've had it from various supermarkets and not seen any warnings. I enjoy it so I'm carrying on eating it! It's a miracle any of us were born without any problems as our moms were never given any of these warnings!

the hos consultant told me it was fine i ate loads of it! x

omg i dint even no about this i went out for dinner yesterday and had this on my pasta :( :(

Parmesan is fine, like someone else said, just the soft cheeses that harbour listera.

I use dried cheese in my carbonara, I noticed the morrisons one uses unpasterised milk, but not all of them do, just read the sides- I used the italian brand with a black label that does pizza bases etc begins with N cant remember right now!!!! x

Parmesan, chorizo, salami - I've eaten them all lots this time (craving cheese and meat) as i'm sure the Italians do!
