There was something on the news that shocked me today.
A woman who was breastfeeding was prescribed T3's to help with the pain (she had bad pain in her girlie bits from the birth) and all the doctors had told her it was fine - she went to many just to make sure, and they all told her only a little bit would get into her breastmilk & wouldn't affect the baby.
Wel, the baby passed away at 11 days due to the codeine in the T3s.:cry::cry: I felt the need to post this here because lots of times they say only a little bit will go through but you NEVER KNOW, and you always need to be safe & remember that whatever you consume so does the baby, its beyond me how they can determine HOW MUCH goes through to your breast milk.
F'ing idiots @ the hospital gave me T3's too while I was breastfeeding! The poor woman.:(

This happened prior to Jan 2007.

The woman was an ultrarapid metabolizer of the codeine which metabolizes into morphine. The concentration of the morphine built up in the infant to toxic levels. (Infants metabolize many things a lot slower than adults... caffeine being one of them).

This was the first ever reported case of this.

If you are prescribed T3, just make sure you only take it 2 or 3 days pp so if you happen to be an ultrarapid metabolizer, it doesn't have an opportunity to build up in baby.

Obviously if you aren't breastfeeding this isn't an issue.

This is the case review by Canadian Family Physician:

Wow... That is scary! I was given T3's. After I spoke to the doctor and told him I was in pain still he said to take 2 every 3 hours. I was taking 12-16 a day for 10 days. I feel really lucky that everything seems ok with Brooklynn. I asked everyone how safe it was, very scary...

OMG, here in UK they gave me painkillers with codeine as well after birth! took only two though, but I looked at the nurse in shock and said, but those contain codeine and I am breastfeeding!!! (I am anyways always very reluctant to take codeine as it can make addictive!!! think in Germany it is not even allowed anymore!!! in the past it was in mostly all the cough remedies!)

the nurse said they are fine!!!

find it always surprising how different things are from country to country!!!

I remember the docters and midwifes saying to me that i wasnt allowed any form of codeine if i was breastfeeding as its not allowed anymore. Dont know why others were allowed to take it while breastfeeding??

so sad. i was offered morphine. i assume thts ok then??? i declined uit just in case, and the pain wasnt so bad anyway.

Even Tylenol carries some side effects that may not be very good, but it is for the most minute part of the population. Generaly, the benefits far outweigh not having it available at all. There has only ever been one case of this reported so there is not much risk. Jmho

Thank you for letting me know about this!!!

Codeine is banned in Dubai. You can go to jail for it.

Prozac, Valium, Xanax, Zoloft, Zyprexa- common mood stabalizers

Prepulsid - common gastrointestinal mobility drug

Stadol - common drug used during labor

These drugs are all banned in Dubai.

Seems that different governments approved the use of different meds... wonder how they determine what's bad?

i was offered morphine.

morphine

wouldn't have thought, this is still in use

possibly on one occasion not harmful, don't know though :baby:

I had morphine after Sam was born while I was having my stitches done, as my tearing was really bad - it was either that or have an epidural and be taken to theatre, and I didn't want to leave him (or have an epidural after the birth having got through it without one!) I wasn't told I shouldn't breastfeed x
