hi everyone this is going to sound really trival compared to what you have all gone through with your babies in scbu. but i was wondering when your babies started wearing clothes. let me explain why i'm asking my waters broke at 20 weeks i'll be 30 weeks on sunday so he/she could come any day but i have been warned that he/she might not survive birth and if he/she does then will deffo be in scbu. because i have been warned that baby might not survive i haven't bought anything for him/her at all (couldn't cope with having to pack it all away if worst happened) so i just wanted to know when babies wore clothes straight away or after a while. thanks for reading know it's a crazy thing to worry about my way of coping i think

Seriously dont worry yourself about this, but I know what its like to obsess over the details when you know they will be here early, I know I did! Ours were 2lb13 and 3lb13 born at 31+6 and they didnt start to wear any clothes for about 10 days and even then it was just a vest really. The NICU have tons of prem clothes so I would definitately advise not to go out and spend a fortune (mothercare and Mamas & Papas do prem stuff if your uk but its not cheap) they very quickly grow out of things but then I have got 1 tiny thing each in their keepsake boxes. They were eventually in early baby and didnt go into newborn clothes until just after their due date. So it would probably be useful to buy some early baby stuff, they were in that for a bit, but use the NICU stuff before that? (apart from keepsakes) I hope that helps and I wish you all the best, you have managed to get to 30 weeks that is brilliant, keep cooking :hugs:

Donnad it's so not trivial Hun.
I haven't packed anything until today for this baby. I was told generally after 35 weeks I could possibly go home with baby, but anything before that would need a stint in NICU.

at your gestation I wouldn't worry too much about clothes just yet, but if you want to buy something and pop it in your bag anyway go for it. Generally though incubators and heated cots are warm enough so baby will live in a nappy to start with.

thank you to both of you for replies, it is such a trival thing to be worrying about but only thing i have control over the rest is down to the doctors and mostly baby. thanks for you advice having a preemie is new ground my others where all full term so i feel like a new mom again it's really scary so thank you so much

:hugs: we're always here x

My LO was born at 28 weeks and 6 days, and didn't wear clothes until he was around 1 month old. The hospital should provide clothes for your LO if he or she does have to stay in the SCBU -- in fact, if they do, I would advise against bringing your own clothes, because they can misplace them (this happened to me 3 times, and I ended up losing 1 of his outfits, even though his name was written on the collars and tags). If you can't help yourself, and you do buy preemie clothes, don't buy a lot, they outgrow them incredibly fast. :hugs:

It's not trivial at all hunny

Sophie didn't start wearing clothes till she went into a heated cot, which was when she reached 4lbs. She was about 8 weeks, so 35 weeks gestation.

We're here for you if you have any questions or worries at all

Definitely not trivial Dear.

My LO first wore clothes the first time I got to hold her, which was when she was 4 weeks old. Even then it depended what nurse was on whether we came in to find her dressed or not as some thought she was still too small.

The NICU did have a wardrobe full of clothes you could borrow but I know to start with they didnt have anything small enough for us.

I know when I was first allowed to dress her, getting a few bits of clothing and some muslins (the hospital let us use these as wee sheets to make up a wee pretty bed for her in her incubator) made me feel like I was doing something for my baby as we couldnt do much else at that point (we were doing nappies and cleaning her face etc but let me feel like I was 'providing' for her if that makes sense). I even asked if I could take in my own nappies!!!! (I didnt in the end but was desparate to be able to do something). The hospital allowed us to attach a laundry bag to the end of the incubator and the nurses knew to put the muslins and clothes in the laundry bag when they were dirty, we then took them home, washed and ironed them and took them back in. Definitely helped and now I have some of them in her keepsake box.:hugs:

This is how wee made up our LO bed in the hosp with her muslins. Hope it helps.x

Abby was about 3 weeks old before she wore clothes, but NNICU will have some you can use until you are able to get some.

Don't worry about going out and buying stuff, there will be plenty time to do that.

And there is no such thing as "trivial" when it comes to Preemie baby questions!:hugs:

I hope all goes well for you, be sure to keep in touch with us:thumbup:
