I keep reflecting on my labor experience 4 months ago and am interested
to know whether what I experienced is normal labor or was it back labor?
My first sign that labor was approaching was severe back cramps and pressure. The following evening I all of a sudden started getting regular contractions,a few minutes apart, from the start they were intense and all concentrated in my lower back, bum and thighs...when I got to hospital I was 4cms dilated and was basically getting contractions very close together.

I then got in the pool and all of a sudden my contractions were constant and very very intense ,huge pressure in my lower back and thighs,I then found that my body automatically pushed my baby out but this part was not painful at all.
I never felt any pain at the top of my tummy or anywhere at my tummy really...it was all intense pain and pressure in my lower back, butt and thighs...
I had a natural birth with very little monitoring and the midwives never mentioned what position my baby was in.
My labor was very quick and I used hypnobirthing, altho i tried my relaxation techniques,i still felt horrendous pain in my back, every time i used the deep breathing technique it made my contractions stronger and more painful. When i had Braxton hicks they were always at the top of my belly so i found it odd that i didn't feel the real contractions there.

Sounds like you could have had some back labor but based on the fact that ur contraction were regular and ur labor was fairly quick and ur water didn't break ahead of time, I would guess that you baby was not posterior. I had a posterior birth and labor is very different. Generally a posterior baby take hours and hours longer, pushing takes longer too, there are cervical anterior lips involved (though those can happen in any type of labor), contractions are irregular for practically the entire time and usually laying or siting is the worst feeling in the world. Not to say that all w posterior babies experience that. But to me, it sounds like maybe at one point baby was OP, but thats not uncommon to happen in labor at some point. Babies do a corkscrew motion downwards, so back labor isn't uncommon, but it doesn't sound like a typical posterior birth, so baby was probably head down, face down (anterior aka normal). Some women are just prone to feeling everything in their backs.

With that said, yes that was a normal birth. Your body did exactly what it needed to do.
Also I'm sure it would be on record, so grab yourself a copy of your file :flower:

your yellow notes should say the type of labour normal labours babies are born face down in back to back labours they are born face up so there spine is against yours in my experience they are difficult labours (not that labour is difficult anyway lol) but my sis in law had 1 back to back and she has 3 children she said it was the hardest out of all 3 and although i havent nothing to compare it to yet i would say my labour was horrendous long and drawn out my waters wouldnt break my baby never engaged because of her position and i was left pushing for 2 hours with no sign of a head a consultant had to move her into firing line basically she was rested on the right hand side of my pelvis all the pain was in my back and top of my legs i did have pain in my tummy too but my back was way to severe to think about that lol im worried this baby will do the same as she is also down my right hand side and has never moved xx

What way was the baby facing when the head was delivered? If it was facing up or to the sides then no, thats not 'normal' position for baby to be born in. They ideally want to be facing down. Born facing up is the most painful and difficult position to birth and sods law, my daughter was born facing up LOL

Hm, don't agree. Like I said, Amelie was boring face up so a direct OP birth and I had a really straight forward labour and birth. I had intense back contractions but other than that, textbook. Waters broke, few hours later contractions started and grew in intensity and were regular. 15 hours after ROM and 27mins of pushing with no tears, she was born whilst i was on my back

My last one was born face up too, tho still in her sack as my waters didn't go until I lifted LO out of the water!
But, altho my contractions were irregular, I was only in labour for an hour, with established labour being 15 minutes, and I didn't push, my contractions did it all :flower:

I didn't mean that happened in 100% of OP births :flower: but generally there are characteristics of OP babies (PROM, irregular contractions, longer labor, etc) Doesn't mean it happens to everyone :flower: You were lucky! :D Im jealous :haha: Of course, it all depends on when the baby went OP. When they are OP from the start these things tend to happen, but like i said baby corkscrew downthrough, so if they get OP during this corkscrew labors may not be as long, hard, etc

To the OP, i think you should DEF get a copy of your files...none of us were there so all we can do is speculate at this point. Good luck!

No, amelie was back to back from about 37 weeks and didnt move although i spent many an hour on my birthing ball trying to get her to

YOU ARE SO LUCKYY! i am wicked jealous! lol I had the textbook posterior labor- going overdue (41+5), PROM, irregular contractions the ENTIRE time, 100% back labor, long delivery (30 hours!), pushing urge prior to 10CM, and 6 hrs of pushing....no tears or assistance though :D I did the same thing. I looked like an idiot, i am sure  I did all of that Optimal Fetal Positioning stuff and i didn't work :dohh: i saw the chiropractor regularly, i did prenatal swimming, i did yoga on the birth ball. BOO!!! Soo unfair lol Next time i am just gonna be a little lazy arse and what happens, happens

I have no idea when/how long my LO was back to back, the midwife never mentioned anything at any of my routine appts, and she didn'ta mke it in time for my labour.. so she may have just happened to turn that way at the last minute!

am-i-lee or am-ah-lee!

i usually say amahlee but i dont mind if people say amilee.

That is sweet! I like that name alot!
My sisters first name is Aimie and her middle name is Lee, how ironic!....sounds so much better all as one first name! :flow:

Interesting responses,thankyou everyone.
So just because I felt contractions there does not mean ny baby was back to back.
I can't remember where my baby was facing although my OH seems to think she was face down.
How do I get hold of my labour notes?
Thanks
