Im keen on a water birth! Are you still entitled to all drugs if you have this? also this may be abit grumsome but it does worry me, when giving birth in the water pool what if you have (the runs) ?? is this bad for the baby to come out into?? will they take you out? need to start my birth plan so this will help :) xx

apparently you can have gas and air but no others, and the pool has a filter so you won't really notice and other items lol. xx

ooh dear thats put me off now lol its my first so im not sure what drugs i might want! lol, haha 'other items' that made me laugh! thank u xx

my MW went through water birth with me yours should to if you want to, she said that you don't have to stay in the pool so if you feel need more pain relief you can get out, and you can labour in the pool and deliver out of it if you prefer. i'm going to give it ago, some women have said best experience of their lives and it really really helps the pain xxx

ooo that sounds better! i like the idea of giving it a go anyway! might aswell if it helps! if not then ill just get out! i love a bath so i n im more relexed in water! aww thats really helped now im comfident ill do that! thank you laura xxxxxxxxxxx

I don't know what happens if you have the runs but the MWs are armed with a sieve if anything solid pops out! :haha:

I laboured in the pool but gave birth leaning on the bed, not intentionally but I didn't have time to get back in to deliver. I only had G&A as well, it was all I needed. The pool is amazingly relaxing between contractions but the downside is you can't get in until labour is established (in my hospital that's 5cm's dilated) because often the contractions drop off to start with once you're in the water.

right i see so if your finding it far to painful before your established 'in labour' and u take drugs prior to being in the pool does this effect going into the pool? i no the epp injection obvs would! but what about the rest? xx

Hi, I'm planning to labour in water and maybe a waterbirth. I've been told I can only take Gas and Air while in the pool. Morphine/pethadine you can't have as it apparently makes you drowsy and it's too risky whilst in water.

I know they can sieve out solids, but I also worry about the 'softer' ones. I don't fancy sitting in water with my poo in it! lol

You can't labour in the pool till usually around 6-7cms so if it's your first and likely to be a long slow labour I highly recommend pethadine.. You can't get in for two hours after but like I say if it's a long one this won't matter. I had two shots 13 hours and 18 hours in to labour. I wasn't able to get into the pool till 21 hours in when I was found to be 7cms so wasn't a problem for me and dont think id of made it without x

I laboured in the hospitals corner bath (birthpool was in use not allowed to deliver in the bath blah!) It did help me relax loads I think I spent about an hour and a half out of 4 hours in the water.. Another hour of that traveling around in the car haha.. Only gas and air allowed with the pool. Not sure about poo's apart from logs they fish out

its highly unlikely you will be having the runs when in labour simply because your body works its magic and most of us end up having a clear out then consitpated through labour and the first couple of days following delivery lol

I wanted a water birth for my first son, so i'll be trying for one again this time too! I had to be induced so i had to get out :'(
It really was amazing being in the pool though! The gas and air was plenty fine too! When they made me get out, i stood up and felt like i couldn't move, the weight of gravity on the bump was one of the worst feelings i had in my labour. Was not easy climbing out of the pool with the heavy feeling either! It's so amazing feeling weightless in the big massive pool, loved that part <3

I used the birthing pool for both my kids.

My daughter i spent the majority of my labour in the pool but had to get out to deliver as there was meconium in my waters.

My son I gave birth to in the birthing pool, even though there was meconium in my waters again, because it happened too quickly for the midwives to be able to get me out! (So glad I got to deliver in the water :) )

I loved using the birthing pool and if I was to have another, I'd be using the birthing pool again! Not sure what they'd do for runs :haha: scoop? I know my MW and OH were sieving after me   Ohh dignity really does vanish during labour!!

thanks ladies! i think im just going to go for it and see how it goes! ill never no until i try! some of your comments did make me laugh!! xxx

I was in the birthing pool throughout my labour with my first child, it was great and the gas and air was great plus you will have all the support rom the midwives, the only thing i found i kept needing a wee cos i was drinkin lots of water as i was hot..
I never ended up having my lil one in pool had her on the bed but i would defo give it a go im gonna try this time round.
ps. another good pain relief i found wa tens machine it works wonders b4 the pool.

I had a 9lb 9oz boy in water, with just gas and air, and when I lifted my belly out of the water during labour, it hurt like hell...when I was in the water, the pain was almost gone!

I had a pool birth!! it was amazing and i highly recommend it! the warm water was lovely and made me relax! i had gas and air and felt that that was enough... as for pooing...i poo'd in the pool and wee'd and lost masses of plug! it happens!! u wont notice it at all dont worry :) they drain the pool after and its no big deal they dont mind :) hehe xx

They had to use the G&A mouthpiece to bribe me out because they thought of leaving the water made me want to cry! :haha:

If you really want a water birth then try to hold off any other drugs before hand as just because it's your first doesn't always mean it will be a long labour, mine was 6 hours and she arrived 3.5 hours after I arrived at hospital and 3 hours after I got in the pool.
