Water broke 52 hours ago but no contractions :(

Hoping you are doing well, and that you may have started having contractions. :)

I had this exact situation two and a half years ago with my son. I fully support what you're doing and given my time again I would wait it out too. In addition, I would insist on a large dose of antibiotics to counter the chances of infection, I have learnt this is something that is available but not always offered. Are you in the uk?

I had my labour induced with pitot in after 50 hours as they scared me into it. I had an Epi as the pain was unbearable. After 5 hours I was 1cm. My body just wasn't ready. My son got distressed. He was dragged out with rotational forceps in the end. My labour was a contributing factor to him finding breastfeeding hard. He was sleepy from the drugs (2 spinals as the Epi failed) and hard cranial issues from the emergency forceps. I would never be induced again and would opt for c section.

I hope things are working out for you and that you've gone into labour on your own!

Don't let them scare you into thinking you're killing your baby by not having the pit. It's best for them that you have the pit, it's not best for your baby. Get the antibiotics and go home. How many weeks are you?

X

Also just to add, pit as you probably know, makes your contractions so much more intense than natural contractions. This can distress the baby after a while, they are getting knocked about in there a great deal! It also suppresses your own oxytocin, so chances are you will feel totally detached from your baby when they are delivered. Just something to be aware of so it doesn't come as a shock. X

Thanks :hugs: I'm 39 weeks now, living in Canada (but grew up in the UK).

I haven't gone into labour yet :( Feel so guilty about holding off on an induction as it seems irresponsible to many people but I am monitoring myself and baby as best I can and really do feel that the risks of intervention at this point might be higher than leaving things as they are (as they stand right now).

It's not easy and there are horror stories on either side of the fence. I do have some menstrual-type cramping but think this could be from baby nuzzling its head down on me. I have constant backache now too but I'm not going to place much hope in that.

I can't express how helpful this forum is, thanks to everyone for giving me their opinions and support :flower: My head is racing from all the info I've been reading today so I'll have to read everything again but I feel so much more informed.

Good luck hun must be so difficult, are you going in everyday for monitoring?

Pretty sure our hospital has a 48 hour window - but I guess if you've been checked and your nurses aren't worried, just play it by ear.

I went in with DD around 11pm at 40+5 for bleeding, so they induced me due to how far along I was already - I had pitocin and an epidural, my epi didn't slow my labour at all. Got it in at 2cms (total sook, DD was posterior and I was just in agony) but I got from 2cm to 10cm in about 8-9 hours, they were shocked, they thought since I got the epi so early it'd stall it for sure.

good luck!

I think it's quite sad people are so quick to jump to the fact that we should just be treated by protocols regardless and thinking that this woman is putting her baby's life in danger. The hospital has a sweeping policy regardless of your personal circumstances and health professionals are all subject to time pressures as well as concerns regarding litigation. This is one of the reasons why hospitals have policies like this, for guidance. Health professionals don't have a crystal ball and quite often what can go smoothly for one person can be completely catastrophic for another, protocols like this take the decision making out of the individual health professionals hands.
Quite often people get put on these protocols and no clinical reasoning goes into the decision! I am totally on board with what you are doing. As long as the baby's kicking and its observations are in normal range and as long as your observations are in normal range I'd keep waiting. Pitocin does make your contractions longer, stronger and harder and therefore often leads to an intervention full birth as the baby gets more and more distressed.

I was in your position, I was hoping for a water birth but I was bullied about my decision to delay inducing by the obstetric staff. All of our obs were fine but I was told they had a lot of people coming in to be induced the next day and that I would be making them really busy so I should start labour off sooner to get a guaranteed midwife! I held off without being induced for 40 hours. My contractions had started 9 hours after my waters went but weren't sufficient apparently even though I was dilating slowly. I mainly went by my bishops score (which was 9.5) which indicated that a slight augmentation may encourage my contractions. I gave in and had the drip but I felt very guilty about it and very bullied into the decision. The contractions were totally manageable and I gave birth in four hours, tear free and without any mechanical intervention just using gas and air.
Poppy was perfect and neither of us suffered any infections.

Obviously some people do run into difficulty sooner and sometimes the 24 hour rule should be applied. But like with anything, things should be judged on an individuals situation. If I were you I'd be asking what your bishops score is, less than 7 is likely to lead to a failed induction (c section). Also I think if he nursing staff are supportive of your decision then even better! Just keep in touch and regularly monitor your obs and especially your temperature.

Good luck mama in whatever you decide to do xxx

I experienced this with my son. They didn't let me go home though, they put something inside me to help me contract and then put me on a drip to help me! Eventually it happened however I only got to 4cm and they had to perform a c-section as the labour wasn't progressing! All experiences are different Hun and I know what your going through not wanting a c-section! Will keep my fingers crossed for you! Xx
