Waters breaking - Advice badly needed

I've never experienced it, so I can't say, but I would think if you were checked over and they aren't concerned, then you shouldn't worry about it. AND contractions should begin after the waters break, so if you don't experience any, I would imagine you are fine. Is it possible it was your plug? I lost some of mine the other day, and it felt like a lot of cervical mucous. I've had CM during this pregnancy that totally soaks my underwear

You might not think it but you probably did just wet yourself. I did in the later stages of my 1st pregnancy and its starting again now. I have great control of my pfm but still cos bubs is so low i leak. If it were your waters, they would still slowly trickle plus the midwife checked your cervix.
With me, i found my discharge to be thicker towards the end of my pregnancy so id def say it was a urine leak :)

Waters don't always slowly trickle. Sometimes they come in a big gush and sometimes something between the two. If it's a trickle, it's likely the hind waters. If it's a gush, it's the forewaters (the water in front of babys head). If it's the hind waters, and the FW are still there, there might not be enough pressure on your cvx to start labour, because the water is still tehre as a kind of cushion between LO's head and your cvx.

If the OP has wet herself before and knows the difference, then I say - trust your gut! you KNOW you didn't wet yourself... so this is either clear discharge or it's waters breaking. and midwifes don't ALWAYS get it right.... they are only human!

Hmm i just dont get how her waters would be coming out if her cervix is closed?

I had this twice in the late stages of my pregnancy. Both times I was convinced it was my waters leaking but thought I would just sit tight and see what happened - nothing did and I never did work out what it was either, Im sure it wasn't wee.

When my waters did go a week or so later there was definately no doubt about it - felt the pop and LOTS of fluid.

Good luck!

My cervix has been closed since my waters broke at 14+5. They have been leaking on and off ever since. I even had some bleeding on Weds night, (which obviously came out of my uterus via the cervix) but when I went to the hospital and was examined my cervix was still closed. There is always a tiny gap there, even when it is closed.

just a question......................... had you had a bath within a couple of hours ???? if so, sometimes your vagina can hold in some water and later on when all muscles are relaxed, or opposite, if u go to pick something up etc the water can be expelled. just a thought ???

Hmm... is your cervix open or closed when you have a period?

NB: Midwives can get things wrong.

Also, your cervix doesn't just open and get more and more open until you are fully dilated. You can UNdilate. So it is perfectly feasible that the cervix was closed at the time she was examined, EVEN if it had to have been open in order to lose any water. If you lose your plug, that can reform itself... but I don't know how long that takes.

Your cervix isnt completely watertight hun (especially at this late stage when its possible baby is engaged/she may have lost some of her plug)

my membranes ruptured early in my last pregnancy so my waters began leaking but my cervix stayed closed until I went into labour a few weeks later xx

I'm glad someone mentioned the cervix being closed because I must admit I did wonder myself but it makes perfect sense especially when you think about having periods as Madasa mentions.

No, I hadnt had a bath. I was just coming in from the cinema. I had been rushing around all day as my brother had been in hospital and had barely drunk anything, just 2 sips from a bottle of coke (I know that isnt good!) so bladder would hardly have been full.

I wont have sex or take a bath just in case but just a question...there are all the tales of what brings labour on and of course sex is one of those. I am assuming this is because of what orgasms do to your uterus but if you are heavily engaged, would having an orgasm definately increase your chances if anything? Or could it actually adversely affect by forcing the babys head out of engagement?

slightly different for me as my waters gushed out for ages so i new it ws my waters. But at the end when they started to trickle everytime i sat down they woiuld stop then when i stood up i would have a small gush agagin. That is waht i was toild would happen if you had just a trickle. My waters where clear and had no smell. I felt it as i gushed out of curiosity and they where slimey feeling. Hopefully if yoiu get more you can feel it. I think you onl have a risk of infection if you lose all your water. So even if that was a little bit of your waters you should have no risk of infection.

its not necessarily the orgasm that brings on labour hun (although it can cause braxton hicks which may or may not develop into proper contractions) - its actually a chemical in your OH's :spermy: which contains prostaglandins and has a softening effect on your cervix (prostaglandin pessaries are inserted into your vagina when you are being induced)

but if you are at all unsure about your waters leaking its not advisable to have sex just incase as you could be open to infection as soon as your membranes have ruptured xx

Once your waters have broken, there is a massive risk of infection because the amniotic sac, which would normally portect the baby from infection and contains the amniotic fluid, is broken.

Provided baby is ok, he/she will keep producing amniotic fluid too, so you will continue to leak unless baby is 'blocking' the gap, although it may to be constant.

There isn't always a 'gush' is the waters break, some women's waters break and they don't notice for weeks until they go for a routine scan only to find no fluid.

Sex works in four ways:
1 - the rush of oxytocin when you are intimate with your OH
2 - the, umm, bouncing around makes LO's head press down on your cervix
3 - the orgasm stimulates your uterus
4 - the prostaglandins in his sperm applied to your cervix (the gel they use when they induce is basically a concentrated version of this: fake spunk with loads of prostaglandins in!)

I shouldn't think it would force the baby's head out.... babies can disengage and engage again anyway, even without rampant sex, so I don't think it's a concern?

ops. only repeating what my consultant told me

If your still concerned go back and requst a scan to check water levels. I hadn't a clue about waters and had no idea about whether mine had gone or not, so went in they chekce dme over and docs yes and no'ed over was waters or not. I was 1.5 cm dillated and they sent me for a scan and discovered there my waters were below what 3 in all quadrants (they divide womb up into qyuarters and each quarter should have waters above 5 I think.) Anyway I was then induced, but I was dillated and it ran down my legs to my ankles, not sure if jeans would of absorbed it or not?

I loose alot of discharge I could easily have a patch that dampens my thighs etc which would prob equal to plam of my hand?

So don't know how to answer but you prob would of had a a few more little gushes if it had been your waters but yeah go back if your still unsure?
