Just looking for new, fun ways to teach LO? He doesn't seem to want to work on it much which is completely fine but I think I'm just being boring about it :haha: He is getting the "concept" of counting when we doe something I go 1...2....THREEEE!! And he gets excited about that and says "Three, three, THREEEE" which is cute and shows he's kind of catching on....Any ideas?!

We just incorporate it into our day as games- LO will repeat the alphabet as we sing it or just go through all the letter at bedtime... we count when we walk- etc... we have letter/number books too. I did used to buy letter stickers and I'd hand them to her and sound out the letter and she'd repeat- then stick it on her easle... that's about it tbh. I figure the rest she'll learn in pre-school... hehe

We would just count everything we did - climbing stairs, how many snacks he had etc and through the day I would tell him or ask him the colours of things like which cup do you want the blue or the green , let's put on your red coat . Using crayons and drawing is a good way to do colours. We also have lots of free iPad apps for letters numbers shapes and colours. We have a tub offoam letters and play find the letter. We also have a big foam hopscotch which is fun for numbers.

We've just got foam bath letters and Micah loves them, we also watch the jolly phonics songs on YouTube which he loves to sing and have sung to him. He also likes me drawing letters in sand/mud etc

He doesn't know colours yet, but I'm talking about them a lot and he is interested, but not accurate yet.

Numbers, we count everything! He loves to count as we climb stairs but misses out 3 and 4 for some reason.

I count what I do with PJ, steps we walk up and down, the number of chicken nuggets on his plate, etc. Colors I do the same, when he brings me a block, I say the color, "oh this is a red block. You brought Mommy the red block." And when I dress him, "we're going to put on blue jeans, a green shirt, white sock"s, etc. I sing the alphabet to him all the time as well. But I must be a crap teacher because when I ask him to bring me "the red block", he just brings me any color block. :dohh:

The foam bath letters and numbers are great. Also we count everything! Fingers, toes, cheerios, fish in the aquarium, etc. I sing the alphabet song a lot. We haven't worked as much with colors yet.

Much the sane as above. My son is 3 1/2 and knows all colours, shapes, cam count and recognize numbers to 10 and most letters. I did no formal teaching... Just counting steps, saying the colour or shape of things, reading lots and lots of books, bath letters ect.

I think the trick is as others have said, just incorporate it into daily life rather than working on it specifically. Abby definitely learns best when she doesn't think she is learning.

I point out the colours of her clothes or her toys. I count things that we use (like I count out her vitamins in the morning. And letters she sometimes asks me to draw letters on her magnetic drawing board thing and I say the sound of the letter when I do it.

Pretty much what everyone else has said, just try to incorporate it into every day things like the color of the toy, if you have a shape sorter that's great for doing shapes AND colors, counting blocks, counting fingers and toes, singing abc song, etc.

try the Twinkl website, there are lots of free resources on there, print outs and so on that cna help children of any ages with learning, great for home schoolers too.

For colours we bought a big bag of those plastic balls and a pit to put them into and made it into a game of bring mummy the red/blue/green ball etc.

For letters we have fridge magnets at floor level that he can play with and we sing a little song - A is for apple and so on.

We have foam numbers that we use in the bath or sometimes I give him white chocolate buttons or smarties (for colours and counting)and we count them out - which keeps and small handful going for ages!

We have have lots of books that cover colours, shapes, opposites, animals etc so we read those at night time. There's nothing highly original in all of that but my DS finds it fun and it's amazing how quickly he picks things up.

We just do it in day to day activities. We count stairs, pictures in books, his fingers, his toes. If he gives me a car, I'd say, yellow car, blue car etc. We have foam letters and magnetic letters.

We have only been starting right now.. she can't talk as much right now so i don't expect her to spit out something she cant even say right away but we still count out different things like steps and books etc!

Thanks everyone for the advice! I'll definitely be working on incorporating it into our daily lives more rather than sitting down and "learning" He hates when I sing...seriously yells at me hahahah so I'll definitely have to 'teach' the ABC's a creative way!

Abby is like that with her daddy! Thankfully she lets me sing.

This was one of Abby's favourites for ABCs

I don't think that's bad, I think its important to introduce technology to children as that's the world we live in, and its good for them to know how to use it in different ways, especially as an aid in learning. We use technology, apps, TV etc with our kids too. I think as long as its in moderation, its a great learning tool.
